Half the Afghan population saw the Taliban hanging people in football stadiums with their own eyes in the 90's and yet the army still collapsed on contact.
France lost the Alsace-Lorraine to Prussia in 1870 and still collapsed within months to Nazi Germany.
Russia does have the technological edge right that should be a good force multiplier, especially when having the first mover advantage and taking out huge chunks of the Ukrainian armed forces. We hear the eastern Ukrainian soldiers are already running out of ammo, food, water and equipment.
Im also told that Americans are extremely sensitive for soldiers returning back home in body bags to the point they had to censor the footage from vietnam. Not sure how Russia are im sure they are also sensitive to it after ww2 experience.
Putin is mostly right though. Ukraine certainly wouldn't have its current border without Soviet policy of separate nations for nationalities, which I think is a big mistake. Good thing China didn't go down the same path.
Not only that, but even in WWI France lost a lot of ground despite drilling Revanchisme into their population for decades.
