Dear all,
A Chinese military analyst programme on the recent British Navy DDG HMS "Daring" 4 Days visit to Shanghai, China.

The programme starts with an introduction of military bulletins around the globe:
A) Korean National Airline submits flight plans to China's authorities regarding their commercial flights flying past the Chinese ADIZ; under this plans all flights departing from Incheon International Airport to Hong Kong, Bangkok & Manila will be included and vice-versa;
B) Canada has submitted a report concerning Russia's increasing presence at the Artic region eyeing the oil and energy presence there as well as maintaining military presence, US and Norway also voiced their concerns and urge that the Artic region should be shared among these countries;
C) USAF plans to buy 100x Next Gen Long Range Stealth Bombers to replace the currently deployed B-2s, cost of the new bombers will be estimated at USD 8bn/unit. Original budget was estimated at USD 5.5bn/unit, the new price is almost 47% of the original estimation due to the difference in value of the USD between 2010 and 2013. This huge budget includes the R&D and the cost per unit. A official programme supervisor of US National projects says unless USAF provide the specific reasons and details for the procurement, the cost of R&D is unbelieveable huge.
Then the programme cuts into the main topic and introduces the Type 45 DDG to audiences. HMS Daring is the most "eco-friendly" DDG ever built by the British Navy untilising the most advance electric populsion system. It can cruise from London to New York to and fro without refueling. The HMS Daring can increase its speed from still to 29 knots in just 70 secs about the length of 730meters. The Daring is the first ship of its class to visit China.
The guest today is military expert Senior Col. Fang Bin. He comments that:
1) The Type 45 is a very beautifully constructed DDG;
2) This class is a main surface combatant in the British Navy;
3) Its predecendent was the Type 42 destroyer which one of its class the HMS D80 "Sheffield" and HMS D118 "Conventry" were sunk during the Falklands Island War in 4th May & 25 May 1982 respectively. Since the sinking of the Britich warships during the conflict, British Navy was seeking a multi-role warship which could track, seek, engage and destroy any airborne or underwater threats;
4) British Navy usually classified their warships by number designated from the Type. Type 2X represents Frigate classes and Type 4X represents Destroyer classes;
5) PLAN had considered accquiring the Type 42 in the 80s before but after the Falklands, the idea was dropped;
6) Type 43 & 44 were built in the process but only Type 45 totally satisified the British Navy finally;
7) The Type 45 class reached the main surface combantant's tonnage only 2nd to USN Aleigh Burke classes;
8) Type 45 features Mk-41 VLS (strange!!! I tot the Daring class uses Sylver VLS!!!) which could launch Aster 15 & Aster 30 to achieve near & long range air defenses capabilities. Besides Aster missiles, the warship carries harpoon missiles for anti ship missions;
Before coming to China, it joined in a naval excerise with the USN Tico "Shiloh" and ROKN "Yulgok Yi I", the second ship of Sejong the Great class. This exercise was viewed as a deterrent to China but an ROKN official commented it had nothing to do with ECS recent activities. The British warship happened to be around the area and was invited along to the exercise.
9) Fang continues to analyse that all three types of warships in the exercise happened to be the main surface combatant of the respective countries although Type 45 are not fully Aegis yet;
10) A US-Korea-British naval exercise in this region is very rare. British Naval activities are common in NATO but rare in NE Asia;
11) Last traceable warships were HMS Prince of Wales & HMS Repulse (both sunk eventually by IJN air forces) in the Battle of Malaya and a HMS carrier during the closing phase of Pacific theater in WW2, other than that, the presence of British Navy was slowly fading off in Asian-Pacific region after WW2 and shifting its interests during the Cold War period;
The Type 45 is top 3 among the world's best DDG. After the Falklands, British needed a warship capable of AA, ASh and ASu, however after joint venture (failed) with other countries on classes like Type 43 & 44, Britain went on to design her own DDG and built them independently. Designs of the Type 45 were ever changing and the current design was finally laid down. Its main radar could detect a radius of 300km of any air-borne threats in the likes of incoming anti-ship missiles or enemy planes and a tracking of 8 targets. Its speed is one of its main advantage besides its superior stealth.
12) Sen Col. Fang agrees with the standing of Type 45 being in the third;
13) Its joint combat capabilities and datalink capabilties are the standards being evaluated;
Programme later cuts into a CGI of the HMS "Dragon" escorting an US carrier in the Gulf. A hostile enemy state fires ASh missiles at the task force but the
This could be seen as a mutual win situation; where the Royal Navy could "follow" the USN for more combat realistic missions. Secondly, increasing exposure of Royal Navy's warship enhances Britain's international images. Thirdly, a capable DDG in the likes of Type 45 could lessen US military expenses of deploying an AB class escort, cutting military expenses for other proposes. The report ends by if there is one day a Type 45 escorting an US carrier, please dont be alarm!
A Wales dragon is being painted on the hull of the HMS "Dragon". It is the same dragon that appears on the Wales flag.
14) This idea could be useful if Royal Navy decides to train her own carrier escort capabilties before her own QE class carrier serves the navy;
Programme then shifts to a brief report on HMS "Dauntless" being deployed to Falksland Island in Jan 2012. THe Argentine authority viewed it as a threat but the British MoD replies that the Dauntless was replacing the TYpe 23 HMS "Montrose" stationed there. However, many British Naval officials saw this move as an agressive stance from British government of not letting go of Falklands. A British official once said that a single Type 45 could destroy the whole of Argentine's air forces!
15) Fang thinks that there is some possiblities of Type 45 destroying the Argentine's air forces since there are not much upgrade in terms of Argentine's air forces since 1982. However, it is not entirely the whole Argentine air forces but the type of air craft deployed by the Latin nation instead;
16) There used to be civil rumours that Argentina wants to buy JF-17, but the deal did not went thru, afterall it is just a rumour. He added that if a second Falklands war happens, Argentine were to be lose even badly due to equipment deployment;
Finally, it compares the PLAN Type 052D and the HMS Daring class. The 052D would be still incomparable to Daring in terms of populsion (conventional vs electric), tonnage and weapons.
16) The Type 052D's open data are still speculations at the moment, so it is still early to speculate from civil rumours.
Good day to all.
