Fron that article:

"The Japanese government said Friday that China on Thursday had test-fired the Ju Lang-2 missile, a modified version of China's Dongfeng-31 intercontinental ballistic missile.

Ju Lang-2 was believed to have been fired from a nuclear sub in waters off Qingdao, landing in a desert in China several thousand kilometers away."

If a sub fired it, it would very likely have been a Type 094 I believe. I am not sure that the new SLBM will fit into the older Chinese SSBNs, but am not sure on that count.

Interesting if true. Still no real confirmation though. No way to tell as even the source doesn't seem sure. The article also quotes a source that says JL-2 can be carried on it's Han Class Submarines. But yeah, if it was fired from a sub, it would have to be a new design. I don't think the Xia's tubes are large enough to hold and launch JL-2. JL-2 is reported to have a 2 meter diameter where JL-1 has 1.4 meters.

I believe they had a specially modified Golf class submarine to test JL-2. You can read about it here

Thanks tphuang! Here's what they say:

"Thee JL-2 program is using the former Soviet Golf-class SSB conventionally powered ballistic missile submarines as its trials platform."

Very interesting if true...but the only listed reference is this: "National Photographic Interpretation Center. "Photographic Interpretation Report: Recently Named Chinese Communist Vessels" August 1967 [NPIC/R-135/67] ...a 1967 source.

So it seems they may also speculating on the Golf 2 as the launch platform, like others are on the Type 094. Very interesting discussion.

Yeah, it's quite possible that JL-2 is available for testing before 094 is at the stage that it can do test launches. So, you first test the missile to see that it works and then you later launch it with the intended launch platform. So, if launch fails, you know it's 094's problem, not JL-2's problem. Makes a lot of sense to do things this way.

Hard to say if it's PS. For one thing, Hui Tong is the last guy on Earth who would be fooled by such. I would say I trust his judgement well enough. The picture looks good enough but I like to see more. I remember how many people were saying PS when the first 052C and Yuan sub pictures came out. What about the KJ-2000? And look what happened next.

I would expect it to look like a Xia because the ancestral descent is going to be that obvious. And yes, it has a hump in the back BECAUSE this is a ballistic missile sub and that hump carries all the missiles.

The only way to be absolutely be sure if more pictures would surface in the time to come. As for now, this goes to the "Highly Possible" folder.

Well, say 094 pic was real...

I wouldnt be surprised with its appearance...

Afterall, it could have benefitted a lot from Russian assistance....thus you have something which looks like Delta IV...distinctively its long hull and very high hump.

Yet it would inherit things from the Xia...I think with Xia still operating, it isnt a bad boat after all those upgrades.

I previously did not want to comment on this, because I frankly was not sure, but this is an interesting thing that I found.

^ What are you saying? Pictures 2 and 3 are Xia, right? But the purported Type 94 has perpendicular sides on the control tower thing?
