The tube looks like a YJ-62 to me. Furthermore, Talwar at CDF has an enlargement on one of the back of the Type 22s, and gamma balanced out the image. What appears looks more like the YJ-62 racks you see in the 052C. This leads me to the possibility that the ship has two missile set options, one with the YJ-83 and the other with the YJ-62.

I don't think the missiles on 052C is called YJ-62. You must be confused with the C-602 which is merely a export ASM and never deployed on PLAN warships. I think it is called YJ-12, from what I heard on

PS: I also heard the two missile modules can carry a combination of various ASMs like YJ-12, YJ-83, and YJ-7.

C-xxx designation is just the export designation for YJ-x series. Much like YJ-81 is C-801, YJ-82 is C-802 and YJ-83 is allegedly C-803.

I would be darned if a missile as potent as the "C-602" isn't deployed in the PLAN. Export versions are mere slightly downgraded versions of domestic equivalents.

From what I heard of YJ-12, allegedly it is a supersonic missile.

if yj62 is already in service then what is the purpose of using the old yj83? as for yj12, that should be the supersonic missile that was once shown on a jh-7 model

Supersonic missile like the one hanging on the JH-7A's wings isn't going to get that much range because you trade speed for range with your burn fuel rate. A missile like that would have a range similar to a Kh-31A (around 70km), though that is perfectly adequate for a FAC. However, it seems to me that this missile appears to be airborne only (the Kh-31 never had a ship borne version, though its closest relative is the Sunburn itself.)

YJ-83 is smaller, more convenient and proven. YJ-62 is bigger, more of a Tomahawk than a Harpoon, and that alone means that these two missiles have different niches.

the first picture possibly answers the question that we've all been waiting for.

with 200km range, it require over the horizon surveillance capability.
during the cold war, the soviet invest heavely in both airborne and space sensor to search and track US ship.

That also appears to be what China is doing.

It does not really answer anything to me anymore, since the issue may be moot. The 022 might be modular and may in fact be able to carry a variety of AshMs, not stick to one type. Looking at the picture, there seems to be a lot of extra length and space for bigger missiles.

Re: Missiles for 2208 catamaran FAC

..Or..

Its been quite long period of time between the first introduction of 022 and now these first glanzes of the missiles. Compared to other chinese new warships which seems to carry the all the weapons and systems (or replicas) even before they are going for seatrials. Ofcourse there can be hundreds of reasons for this but this what came to my mind...

YJ-62 is most likely bit trouplesome program. I don't know what particular proplems it may have but as the 052Cs constantly seems to go seas without the missiles (unlike any other chinese large surface combatants) its rather obvious that something isen't like planned.
Now if we look the images of 022 with YJ-83 onboard they seems to be slightly undersized for the hangars. So could it be that the boats were orginally designed to field the new YJ-62 hence the larger hangar, but as the new missile is running some proplems the Yj-83 is serving as a substitute? This could explain the long period of the boats runnig without missiles.

Just my toughts however.
