That is why you need a seperate set of aircraft with the radar either in the nose, underneath the nose or set in the side in the cheeks, or underneath the plane, in order to scan the surface. Y-8s, Y-7s, helos, other ships, even H-6s and subs. OTH radars also help. These assets do not need to provide accurate targeting, they only need to provide the general location of the target so that you can give a way point for the AshM. Once the AshM reaches the way point, it can activate its seeker and find targets within a roughly 40-60km radius. That's a huge basket, only limited by the radar horizon.

Actually USAF E-3 Sentry's are very effective at picking up ground targets. E-3's are often used by the US Customs Service on counter-drug operations as aerial sensors for detecting everything from drug running aircraft to suspicious boats that may be running drugs. It is often quoted that USAF E-3's are often able to pickup garbage bags floating in the ocean very easily.

The mission of the E-3 continues to grow and change. Aircraft And personnel deploy to Manta, Ecuador, to support civil law enforcement in stopping the flow of illegal drugs from Latin America into the United States and Canada.

The E-3 also flies missions around the world to aid in the security of the President of the United States and assisted federal agencies in relief efforts in the devastated areas of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The wing flew - 30 sorties totalling 276 flying hours - coordinating relief efforts of both civilian and military aircraft.

陆海军最初是从配备大量小型舰艇的近岸海军起家，到20世纪80～90年代以后，开始逐渐向远洋化发展，大力发展各式大中型水面舰艇，原有的大批老旧快艇则逐年淘汰。在“红箭”级、“红星”级导弹快艇陆续装备后，大陆海军快艇的发展在很长一段时间内都没有重大成就，同时期建军的焦点集中于大型水面舰艇与潜艇。然而，在2004年上半，有一种崭新的大陆快艇开始亮相曝光，就是设计前卫的022型导弹快艇。与先前的保守结构相比，022型勇于创新，不仅融入隐身造型，更大胆采用高速穿浪艇体结构。

　　高速穿浪艇体融合了小水面双体船与穿浪船的特性，但改善了小水面双体船的一些弱点。高速穿浪艇体的船体两侧各设有一个狭长流线形片体，水线面积低，这部分的设计与小水面双体船类似；同时高速穿浪艇体在船身中央又增加一段平时不吃水的深V字型的船体，其艏部特别尖细，能穿浪而行。在平静的水面航行时，高速穿浪艇体仅靠两侧的片体提供浮力，航行阻力极低；当波浪较大时，深度较浅的中央穿浪船体也开始吃水提供浮力，两侧片体此时担负平衡的功能。由于必要时能以中央船体提供浮力，因此高速穿浪艇体的吃水比小水面双体船浅，其对载重的变化也不像小水面双体船一样敏感，故能在浅水域有效操作。总之，穿浪高速船体拥有小水面双体船的低阻力、稳定、甲板面积大等优点，耐波力、稳定性则更胜一筹，并能在较广泛的水域操作。大陆从上世纪80年代起展开对小水面双体船的初期研究，首艘自制小水面双体船海关巡逻艇于2000年下水，同年从美国引进一艘二手的小水面双体船船只，并针对国外性质类似、特性更优秀的高速穿浪船体进行研究。几番磨剑后，022型快艇就是最显著的成果，成为全球首艘采用此结构的作战舰艇。

　　022型快艇首艇2208艇于2004年4月在上海江南造船厂下水建造，整体轮廓低矮扁平，舰体外观经过隐身设计，简洁流畅，据称其雷达截面积仅相当于30吨的小艇。倾斜主桅上装有小型搜索雷达与航海雷达，艇桥顶端设有貌似光电射控仪的装备，桅杆上还装有HN900战术数据链天线。近年来，大陆南海舰队舰艇普遍加装此型战术数据链，显示大陆积极落实海上协同作战，由雷达桅杆较高、侦测距离较远的大型舰艇向小巧的导弹快艇提供战术数据，再由导弹快艇遂行突击任务。在022的艇身后段两侧，各有一个大型的倾斜适形构造，由其微微向外倾斜、后方可开启、前方设有类似开口的正方形板盖等外型特征判断，应该是用来容纳反舰导弹发射器。此外，艇艏装有一门类似AK一630的小口径自动化炮塔，并使用具有隐身造型的炮塔壳。

　　022型快艇拥有四具水喷射推进器，分别安装于两侧延伸艇体上，主机的进气口位于两舷导弹收容结构下方。使得快艇高速航行时产生的噪音与震动远小于使用桨叶的传统结构快艇。外观上，022型艇找不到明显的烟囱结构，据说是由艇体中段下方排出，受到艇体的遮蔽，对于降低红外信号颇有帮助。虽然还不清楚 022型的各项性能、装备数据，不过绝对是近年大陆新造舰艇中最具前瞻性且最大胆的一款设计。推定其艇长40米，宽10米，吃水0.8～1米，主机为四具柴油机，采用前后各二配置。

　　从2005年开始，022型导弹快艇的量产工作如火如荼地进行中；至2006年中，除了已经服役的4艘外，正在建造的同级艇还有大连2艘、柳州4艘、广州4艘、上海6艘，总计18艘之多，据说大陆还正在计划建造500吨以上的大型高速穿浪艇体导弹快艇。022型的高速与隐身性使其非常胜任于快速突击任务，不仅对敌方大型舰艇构成威胁，也很可能用来牵制对手的导弹快艇，使后者无法专注攻击大陆大型舰艇编队。

But what about cover? Wouldn't using big ships and planes blow the cover on the wolf pack? These ships are stealthy but it is rather dumb to have unnecessary risk. What if in that pack, 1 of the boats are modified to operate UAVs instead. The ASN-206 and its smaller running mates covered in RAM should do fine.
