So, is Turkey getting F-35s any time soon? My understanding was that Turkey would need both the F-35A for her Air Force as well as F-35B for her navy (on the new LHD).
This war has changed things dramatically. Soon? I don't think so, but I'm now more optimistic that Turkiye will eventually get the F-35.

Certainly, I think this war is dramatically elevating Turkey's importance that would put her in a stronger position to expect US concession (or at least US good-will gesture) in this matter. Both the US and China will need Turkey a lot more, now that this war will sour Russia-EU relations for at least a good amount of time.

The director of the SSB has had an interview.

The most important statements were about the MMU.

  • AKINCI B's engine is PT6 purchased from Pratt & Whitney Canada. That engine also has a wide range of applications in the civilian field.
  • About the effect of the Ukraine-Russia war on the engines imported from Ukraine: AKINCI engine has a lot of supply. Our work on an engine to be used in AKINCI will be finished.
  • At least 50 UAVs will be able to be deployed in TCG Anadolu. Depending on the configuration, this number may increase to 100 in the future.
  • At the MMU, we will use the F-16 engines that we are currently using at the first stage. We have an alternative engine supply source from abroad, I don't want to say it right now. (My guess would be Russian with a small chance of it being Chinese)
  • On the other hand, our domestic design work continues at MMU.
  • In addition, we continue to work with Rolls-Royce to produce domestic engines, and we are about to come to a point where our concerns about the cooperation model will be resolved.
  • Turkey is in a position to perform the F-16 modernization very well on its own, AND WE HAVE STARTED TO DO IT.
  • Siper Block 0 (75km range) is coming, Block 1 and Block 2 will continue. We will see Trench Blok 0 at a certain maturity at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
  • With L-UMTAS/UMTAS, we are at a level that can destroy a target at a range of 16 km.

So the Akinci B makes use of a civilian turboprop engine (PT6A-135). If the Ukrainians are unable to deliver the engines with for the Akinci A and C variants, then the PT6 will be sufficient. Luckily, "enough" AI-450T engines have been delivered so far according to the SSB director.

I wonder if the AI-25TLT has been delivered to Baykar. They did sign an agreement for the integration of said engine into the MIUS. If this won't be possible, I expect the Williams FJ44-4A to replace it and the F125 to replace the AI-322F.

The coming to an agreement with RR for the co-development of a turbofan is a pleasant and welcome surprise. the disagreements with RR in 5-6 issues are overcome. The MMU will have 3 different engines it seems, F110, RR-Kale JV (TAEC) and TRMotor.

IMO, RR will still team up with Kale in the JV called TAEC and RR will do the heavily lifting of the design of the engine. I expect an engine of between 30000lb and 33000lb of thrust with a TWR of at least 9 and incorporation all the technologies of the EJ200 and maybe even more and capable of making the MMU supercruise. I also expect at least a 50-50 co-production of the engine in Turkiye and UK with at least the cold-parts being produced in Turkiye.

I hope the 'open general export license' is still valid:

Wil we see the TB-3 on the Izumo? Haluk Bayraktar pitches TB-3 to Japan.

"The upcoming TB-3 will be a great fit for Japan's Izumo-class platforms" the CEO said, referring to Japan's multipurpose destroyer, which analysts call a de facto aircraft carrier. The drone's folded wings will enable a carrier to hold more of them than fixed-wing aircraft.

"Japan should obtain armed drones as soon as possible," he said.

TUSAS released a new animation of the MMU. I'm still confused about the shape of the aircraft, it keeps changing.

It's not changing, it's clearly an old animation that they released only now.
I doubt that. The 'other' and 'newer' shape is known since June last year. I doubt they are going to sit on their hands for more than 8-9 months just to release a sub 2 minutes promo vid.

BTW, the MMU in this vid drops a plain SOM instead of the internal carriage optimized SOM-J. And it also has wingtip pylons which is unique on 5th gen fighters. I don't think these wingtip pylons are impossible but just strange.

We'll see how the real MMU will end up. Or perhaps there is a very low chance they are designing the MMU in two different shapes?
