Bayraktar TB2 and NATO
If Bayraktar TB2 S / UAV is exported to Poland, for the first time, Turkey will have exported domestic UAVs to a NATO country. At the same time, the realization of a possible sale to Poland after Ukraine, one of Russia's bloody knife enemies, is shown as symbolic. It is also known that Baykar Defense has negotiated with a few more countries from Europe for the sale of TB2.

On the other hand, Polish President Andrzej Duda is expected to visit Turkey next week.

Baykar Bayraktar TB2
Bayraktar TB2 SİHA, which is actively used by the Turkish Armed Forces, Gendarmerie General Command, General Directorate of Security and National Intelligence Organization; It has also been exported to Qatar, Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Flying more than 300,000 hours, TB2 has been actively serving within the Turkish Armed Forces, Gendarmerie and Police Department since 2014. Currently, 160 Bayraktar S / UAV Platforms work in Qatar, Ukraine and Azerbaijan, to which they are exported together with Turkey. Bayraktar TB2 broke the record for airborne time (27 Hours 3 Minutes) and altitude (27,30 feet) in Turkish aviation history. Bayraktar TB2 is also the first aircraft to be exported of this scale.

Interview with TUBITAK-SAGE head Gurcan Okumus

Main points of the interview:

  • Ramjet project has undergone more than 100 tests already.
  • Ramjet and scramjet projects are not technology demonstrators but are part of Turkish missile programs.
  • Ramjet infrastructure complete. A windtunnel is under R&D and will be indigenous and thus will not be bought from foreign sources.
  • G40 (ESSM equivalent) will have cold launch capability, quad-packable and will feature a thrust diverting system for target alignment which saves engine burn time by 0.5 to 1 second and thus increases range. If requested it could be ready by the commissioning of the first I-class frigate in 2023.
  • Work is currently on a small, light and cost-effective air-to-air missile for drones and light-attack aircraft against drones and other air targets. This is the rumored Akdogan missile. The Hurjet will be able to carry 10 Akdogan. (A small WVR range missile other than the Bozdogan missile was displayed in 2019 together with the TF-X model at the 'Le Bourget' air show in 2019. Unknown if this really is the Akdogan missile. See picture below)
  • The cited 65km range for the Gokdogan BVR missile is a project requirement and not necessarily the max range when the missile is finished testing. The Gokdogan will have a range and capability far beyond the project requirements.
  • In phase-2, the Gokdogan will go beyond 100km.
  • The last week mentioned Tozkoparan is a medium range air-defense missile concept and will be part of the Siper AD system. (NASAMS equivalent?) It will most probably be based on the Gokdogan BVR missile and will be highly cost-effective.
  • New precision guidance kits will be unveiled at IDEF '21.
  • A question was asked about the Gezgin LACM. The answer: 'No comment!' ;).

Turkey has currently two VLS under development: the hot launch MIDAS and cold launch EDAS. Which one of the two are going to be used is still not clear, perhaps both. According to TUBTAK-SAGE head Okumus, the cold launch method is safer to use than the hot launch and it is more efficient in terms of mass and volume:

Digital union's robotic soldier Barkan is getting ready for duty

1621793601452.png

Barkan, the armed unmanned ground vehicle developed by HAVELSAN to be used in the "digital unity" concept that HAVELSAN has been working on for a while, will soon be on the field.

HAVELSAN, which has been conducting R&D studies in the field of robotics and autonomous technologies since 2019, aims "autonomy in military and civilian land, air, sea and space vehicles" in the process starting with the driving kit developed over the land vehicles usage scenario.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), HAVELSAN Deputy General Manager Muhittin Solmaz said that their work on unmanned systems dates back approximately 1.5-2 years.

Stating that they have started to work on unmanned aerial and land vehicles under the title of robotic autonomous systems, Solmaz stated that they have come a long way in middle class first level unmanned land vehicles within the scope of the studies. Solmaz stated that they continue to work in the under-cloud category in unmanned aerial vehicles.

Emphasizing that they aim to enable these systems to make joint operations and to support this by adding intelligence to the platforms, Solmaz used the following statements:

"Our goal at the starting point is that, independent of the platform, different producers can develop platforms, to be able to add intelligence to them, to ensure that these platforms work together with the swarm algorithms we have developed, to support joint operations. We want to increase the effectiveness of the support or assets of our Turkish Armed Forces and security forces in the field. "

Stating that they have reached the point where they can make joint missions to unmanned aerial and land vehicles with their work, Solmaz said, "Barkan, developed as a middle class first level unmanned ground vehicle, will be able to work together with the under-cloud unmanned aerial vehicle called BAHA, or with other drones in addition to these, We have reached a structure where we can share tasks and work in a herd by adding intelligence to them. " said.

Barkan "will make your mind talk"
Stating that they have developed 2 prototype unmanned ground vehicles before, Solmaz said that Barkan has passed many tests.

Explaining that Barkan was developed in order to conduct armed reconnaissance and surveillance and to support the elements in the field, Solmaz said, "Our work is not only on vehicles. Our biggest aim is to add intelligence to these vehicles and platforms with artificial intelligence. It is important to have the ability to work together and share tasks with manned elements, and to increase our effectiveness in the field. " found the assessment.

Stating that Barkan has a weight of around 500 kilograms to meet the technical specification criteria in the middle class first level category of the Presidency Defense Industry Presidency, Solmaz stated that they have integrated the remote controlled Sarp weapon system into the vehicle. Solmaz also noted that they provide a wide view opportunity to the operator by means of remote control with many communication devices in the vehicle and all-around vision capability.

Solmaz said, "After Barkan, we will continue our work on autonomous and robotic unmanned land vehicles, which are called heavy class." he spoke.

The goal is to present it to the field this year
Muhittin Solmaz, who also made statements about the project calendar, shared the following information:

"Our goal is to start the first field trials of these vehicles as of July, August. It is obvious that there will be some modifications to our vehicles according to the feedback from the field. Some improvements may also be necessary. We want to use the elements that can perform common tasks in the field. Our first drone will take its place in the field as of June.

Pointing out that their ultimate goal is to switch to "digital unity" and to contribute to the elements in the field with digital unions, Solmaz said:

"We want to increase the capability and competence of digital unity together with autonomous and robotic systems. We aim to be able to support the Turkish Armed Forces and security forces with solutions that can make Turkey's presence in critical regions around it more perceptible and make us feel more confident as citizens of the Republic of Turkey. Life is important to us. The lives of our military elements are very precious and precious to us. We continue our efforts to support them in the operation, to provide maximum benefit and to offer systems and technologies that can function in line with their wishes. "

TÜBİTAK SAGE will exhibit guidance kits with new names and features at IDEF 21

TÜBİTAK SAGE will exhibit Kuzgun Modular Joint Ammunition as well as guidance kits with new names and features at IDEF 2021.

Defense Turk Editor-in-Chief Fatih Mehmet Küçük's question: "Will you have a surprise at IDEF 2021?" "Let me put it this way. We will be at IDEF 21. " Responding to Gürcan Okumuş's explanations,

"At IDEF 21, we will be showing a few different products. Maybe we can highlight Kuzgun a little more. I said at the beginning of the program… We will have some guidance kits with new features, but with different names, by gaining talent from the platforms we have developed. I think we'll show them. But let me just say this. I can say these for IDEF 2021, but I think IDEF will be out of this world in 2023. "

TÜBİTAK SAGE Institute Director Gürcan Okumuş, in response to the question of "winged guidance kit with propulsion" directed to him at the ESAS'20 event he attended in December 2020:

“Propulsion Wing Guidance Kit, yes it is in our plans, ie whether to directly propulsion the current winged guidance kit or to advance a winged ammunition in a different configuration… We have our work. Of course, sometimes this can happen too; Now, as TÜBİTAK SAGE, you sometimes work with many companies, namely ASELSAN and TAI and Roketsan, but even if you bring that project to a point, the client institution needs authority should ask for them. After some concepts we work with come to a point, if a project is not opened for this, if there is no demand, this may not return to the production or development project. In summary, we have some studies on the Propulsion Wing Guidance Kit.
