I think negotiators from all countries and their leaders just arent used to dealing with someone like trump/team especially from US side.
Some think if they agree fast that will appease him and wont get a 'bad deal' but then they get squeezed cause he smells weakness.
Some think keep doing many many meetings and keep giving more and more away, end result is the same,
Few stand up and do a 'tough' negotiation and get something amicable back.

The old style thinkers and policy people seem to be all stumped, or they do know but they are saving their careers by not saying the obvious truth.

Seems like apple will be buying magnets from MP materials.

MP materials ramped up from 2017 to mining then processing neodymium refining and magnet production. Magnet production started just this year

I wonder how many Chinese rare earth engineers they poached to ramp up this production ?

Those with more knowledge, are neodymium magnets the main bottle neck for car and phone and motor production or they need a whole variety of magnets that still only china can produce?

The funny thing about the India tarrif is that the India nationalist/media are so upset that it may make it almost impossible for Modi to bend the knee. He now has to please his base supporters and the huge farmers base.

From a us strategic perspective, they either want India as a counter weight to China or they fear India will be the next China. They play the former cards before and they now got both resurrected Russia and a powerful China as best buddies. Maybe someone is tilting towards the latter. Keep India poor , create a angry population, attempt color revolution, attempt take control via some liberal indian etc ??

If 500% tariffs would work on China, Trump would have implemented them with or without Russia. Last time trade ground to a halt, China's GDP growth stood at over 5% while America's went to -0.5%. When China makes deals with Trump we don't hold our end and we don't expect him to hold his end. If he squirms, he tanks his own economy. America's weakness has already been exposed in the trade and tech wars; it is a toothless tiger now that cannot stop growling. So what does China have to worry about?

The words to describe him are "Perfect for China." Everything he does he cuts down America's position in the world, America's economy, government, tech sectors, and education all the while making China look more and more like the responsible leader, an image that every sane US president fought to keep covered.
