Just curious what's the purpose of raising the chains up? Is this a signal or more a safety precaution move?

I knew someone would ask this question. It's to show the aircrew of the helo that all the tie down chains are removed before the helo lifts off the deck.

That's right, a rotary wing aircraft attempting to fly-away with a chain attached is likely to be an instant fireball, it will be ugly...... a whole lot different than doors closed and latched, more on the order of (controls-"free and correct")

OT,,, and I thought she was headed to Ferguson, Mo.???????

I was about 5-10 miles from there this morning, delivering 11 new Cop Rods to a neighboring PD, not a clue that the zoo was just down the road, everyone was kool, and the local PD were relaxed and friendly.

I would say she is very well armed, bd do they engage in live fire off the deck or is it just weapon handling training, all A-2 configuration, no flat tops.....

They do M16 rifle quals in the Navy off decks and use live rounds.

I bet brass detail is VERY important after the firing is over, don't want any single one of them getting sucked into by the choppers coming in for a landing.;)

That's why FOD walkdown is conducted often and extremely important to everyone on board. Ideally they need brass catchers... but a good push broom does the trick too.
