SAN DIEGO (June 17, 2014) Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Hunter Sortore, from Orange County, Calif., directs a landing craft air cushion, assigned to Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 5, into the well deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) as the ship departs Naval Base San Diego for a scheduled deployment. Peleliu will participate in exercise Rim of the Pacific as the command ship for the expeditionary strike group and is scheduled to conduct a follow-on deployment to the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. SAN DIEGO (June 17, 2014) The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) transits the San Diego Bay for Rim of the Pacific 2014. Twenty-three nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in the Rim of the Pacific exercise. Rim of the Pacific provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of the sea lanes and security on the world's oceans.
