Thoughts on Shanghai

From my own observation, there is definitely more interaction between Koreans and Chinese in other countries than between Koreans and Japanese. Just saying.

Well, people like to talk how Koreans and Chinese are confucian societies. Yet, when Koreans are abroad, they tend to hook up with Japanese instead of Chinese because the Korean and Japanese culture is more similar to each other than Korean and Chinese. And Japanese are surely the most 'westernized' culture in the East Asia... Pretty interesting thing, isn't it?Yeah, noticed that with rare Philippine rare turtles, Korean fishes or Japanese red coral poaching lately. Unfortunately, many Chinese tend to 'export' those kind of values abroad instead of keeping them at home and that creates international tensions.

What the hell are you going on about???

Reported.

Certainly, we share much more in common with people of our own nationality, but it's pretty absurd to think that Koreans would interact more with Japanese than Chinese, or vice-versa, based on so-called "cultural similiarity". Far more important factors would be availability and social circles.

For example, here in Toronto, there are many Chinese and Koreans, but very few Japanese. Thus, it's not surprising that most Korean restaurants feature Chinese on their menu (especially considering half their clientele are Chinese!).

In Montreal, on the other hand, there are very few Koreans, but lots of Vietnamese. The Chinese and Vietnamese communities are quite close. I grew up in Montreal and had many Vietnamese friends. A good friend of mine, of Chinese ethnicity, married a Chinese-Vietnamese classmate.

What Janiz probably doesn't realize, based on his ignorant statement, is that there are many ethnic-Koreans from China. Here in Toronto, they're equally at home within the Chinese community as they are within the Korean community. They speak both Mandarin and Korean fluently.

Now why is it, that whenever.currently, there is trouble; especially in the form of crass and offensive remarks, you seem to be the cause or at least in very close proximity.

It's funny, every time I return from a sojourn in China, I'm all filled with elation and a wish to spend more time there. Then, as time passes, I start to feel more negative. I've learned to ignore all negative reports about China from English language media, but Chinese media is a different matter.

There are negative stories about China, written in Chinese by Chinese, all over the internet, and as time passes, I can't help but be influenced by them: the air is bad, the food is bad, the people are bad, everything's bad. Some of the harshest critics of China are the Chinese themselves.

This time in particular, as I am traveling for the first time with a toddler, I was especially anxious. I worried about the air quality, the crowded subways, and even the lack of stroller-accessibility.

It turned out the majority of my concerns were unnecessary. The air in Shanghai was not noticeably different from that of Toronto. Though the subway was as crowded as I remember, everyone gave up their seats for my wife and son. Though accessibility was still quite patchy, it was much better than I expected.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit, and traveling with a toddler, you and your lovely wife probably earned some kind of award, I have two granddaughters born a day apart, and they are like night and day, but both are a lot of work for my daughters, one had a small abdominal surgery today, which went very well and when I went to check on her this afternoon, she was up and "running" around, literally??? blessings to you and your family, and I'm happy that you were able to enjoy your visit. Even here in the US many people love to complain and magnify the problems we are facing as a nation, as a world, seems some folks just can't tell the truth?

I think that is how people make banta. It makes a more interesting subject to complain about stuff than just say that everything is okay, or fine.

Thank you Brat. :)

I think it's just human nature to complain. All the complaints I listed about China are based on truth, just exaggerated when compiled on the internet. Shanghai really does have days of very bad air quality, but it's still just some of the days, and is largely seasonal.

This does need dealing with.
Its a second infraction for posting tasteless remarks and so this time a one month suspension seems in order.
Any more after you return and it will be permanent.
