Video of massive explosion in CHPP-5 gas fired thermal power plant near Kharkiv, Ukraine.
This is a huge 540 MW electrical + 1650 MW thermal power plant that provides both heating and electricity. That explosion likely has destroyed all relevant equipment. This is a piece of legacy equipment that will be unlikely to be replaced.

I can't imagine ways for a similar explosion at that power plant.

There are three oil tanks at the power station, but those should simply burn.

At there is looks like a thermobaric bomb - or something hit a gas storage, or liquid gas storage.

Very strange.

they're never going to get Kharkiv at this point, and Ukraine has already targeted civilian areas of Belgorod, so hitting strategic targets such as power plants that directly provide power to military units is advisable. Power plants (as well as dams, water treatment, sewage treatment, etc) are legal military targets per precedent. 95% of Iraqi power generation capability was destroyed in Desert Storm.

What Russia needs to do is to destroy all major non nuclear power plants in Ukraine before the winter. That's the only way to cripple the Ukrainian economy and their ability to continue fighting

Ukraine has been able to make such territorial gains in such a short space of time because of the failure by Russia in reinforcing the Kharkov Region. In fact over the last few months the Russians greatly reduced their forces in the Region. It is quite stunning that the Russians would adopt such an attitude and posture given that the Ukrainians are not defeated. Even if the Russians had decided not to pursue any major offensive operations in Kharkov one would assume that they would have sufficient forces in position to be extremely vigilant and be able to repel a major offensive by the Ukrainians as they have repeatedly done in Kherson.

To me it boggles the mind as to why the Russians would be so blasé and negligent there. It is plain to see that the Russians have to commit the resources of personnel and materiel much more greatly to meet their minium objective of expelling the Ukrainians from Donbass and keeping it. To do so, they must retake significant regions of the Donbass that they ceded... Yes, it is likely that Russia can and will eventually do so, but it is a further preventable expenditure of resources...

I gather this is no longer happening considering the recent attacks on Ukraine's power plants.

Perhaps Russia's attacks on the power plants were a bit more than simple revenge.

Might even explain Russia's artillery strikes on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant that they hold, (if the Ukrainian claims are to be believed).

This image of Zelensky in Izium says a lot, it really surprised me, I thought he was a stupid comedian with little leadership value in war actions, but he has shown the ability to reach his combatants, consolidate allies and above all feed the morale of its citizens and troops at the front...

On the other hand, the Russian intelligence is still asleep and did not even know that Zelensky was going to the recently liberated zones, or they simply have no intention of touching the Ukrainian government... I am not saying that they will drop a bomb on Zelensky, but at least saturate the nearby areas with guided missiles or artillery... But the Russian reaction has been to look the other way.... In Russia there are definitely no leaders or determination, it is impossible for them to win this war under those circumstances...

Russia had already drawn down its forces greatly in eastern Kharkov before the Ukrainian offensive... So when the Ukrainians went on a major offensive, they didn't have enough man power and materiel resources to make an effective repelling and they did not have the time to rush in manpower to repel it. But that is all Russia's own doing. It should have kept the forces and the resources in Kharkov necessary to defend against a major Ukrainian offensive. At least, it should have kept strong forces in Kupyansk and other locations immediately east of the Oksil River... Where the Russians have gathered the forces and resources necessary, such as in Kherson, they have repelled offensive after offensive by Ukraine at high cost to Ukraine. The value of retaining a strong presence in Kharkov is to defend against Ukrainian offenses in Donbass and keep the Ukrainians in check against Russia undertaking at any time a major offensive within Kharkov and elsewhere...

Russian intelligence is not asleep. They are reporting what goes on in Ukraine well. It is up to the Russian political leadership to act on it...
