“We were chased like rabbits by the Russian artillery,” said Dima Filin, 47, a commander in an artillery unit in the 30th brigade. “We couldn’t do anything. For the last four days we were just hiding from Russian drones.”

, the country’s soldiers are dying by the thousands.
Soldier after soldier told us that between 40 and 60 per cent of the fighters in their units had been killed, most of them ripped apart by Russian artillery fire.
Despite the much-vaunted deliveries of heavy weapons from the West, it is clear that Ukraine is vastly outgunned. Along hundreds of miles of front lines in the east, anger and disillusionment is growing — among seasoned fighters and new volunteers alike — that Ukrainians are dying without being given the chance to fight back.
A month ago, he said, they were firing 150 shells a day at the Russian lines. Now they’re down to about ten a day, because resupplies are falling short. At times, they’ve had none.
“We’re fighting when we have shells,” he said, speaking from Kyiv, where he was recovering from a shrapnel injury to his head. “Otherwise we can’t do anything.”
Complaints abound among the soldiers that some units have received highly effective western weapons, such as American Himars, high-mobility rocket artillery known for its range and targeting ability, while others have been overlooked.
