It is one thing to be able to detect the presence of an aircraft, and another to get a weapons grade lock on it.
You can detect the aircraft with long wave radar, but then fail to get a weapons grade lock with the X-band radar.
They could also have spotted it via electronic emissions or spy reports.

Seems the today's strike was relatively large and looking to overwhelm
