Cant see why they would lie. Friendly fire is more embarassing?

Should be noted that some Russian tg channels are claiming that IL-76 was shot down, not A-50.

The friendly fire hypothesis is highly unlikely since what ukranian plane would be flying that far over Russian territory? The only possibility for it to happen would be if an S350 in fully autonomous mode was placed there and completely misidentified the aircraft (BTW if true this would still mean the Russians were stupid for deploying it in that mode with it's current capabilities).

This is war, mistakes and errors happens. Specially in one such intense and with such technological parity.

Never a war of this type has been so open, historically this kind of things would have been absolutely censored, but nowadays is impossible.

My point is that I am sure that Soviet Union or the US probably did embarrassing mistakes back in the 40s. Simply they were not open.

But Russians should cut some heads if it was friendly fire indeed

There is no official confirmation of this information yet.

The Russians upgrade one A-50 to A-50U standard every year. And soon the A-100 will be in production. The main issue, assuming an A-50 was indeed lost and not an Il-76MD or something, would be the loss of crew rather than the airframe.

How soon is soon? And how many will be produced, say, per year or 2 years? These aircraft are priority targets for any enemy and they WILL shoot down several of them with some help from western ISR and the usual Russian negligence. They need to be available in sufficient numbers ASAP and with solid production backing them up to quickly replenish losses.
