The War in the Ukraine

Lately we are seeing more and more of the Tornado-S, assuming not every ballistic missile strike is an Iskander or it's NK analog (and soon, likely, Iranian analogs, according to Reuters).

Captured Humvee ambulance in Avdeyevka. This might be reemployed with the Russians.

Another batch of modernized BMP-1AM Basurmanin was delivered to the Russian armed forces. Most notable change is the 76mm cannon from the original to the 30mm autocannon which is superior for suppressing fire. The combat module also has placement for ATGMs.

Russians collect all the stuff the Ukrainians left in their hasty retreat. Here this includes a Baba Yaga, a Starlink array, various grenade launchers, AK rifles, mines, grenades and the much sought and starved about ammunition.

EW interference causes the FPV drones to miss twice this AFU transport. However the nearness of the explosions caused damage to the vehicle preventing it from carrying out it's mission.

Destroyed pickup of AFU UAV operators and remnants of an unknown UAV. The pickup could have been carrying the UAZ and it's operators when it was ambushed.

BMP in action. Despite all the horrid losses of APCs and IFVs to artillery and drones, these vehicles are still essential for assaulting trenches and strongholds.

BMP-3 spraying 30mm on Ukrainian positions, in support of an assault. The assault in particular is the takeover of Pobjeda, with the units from the 255th Regiment.

A couple of BMP-2 giving it all in 30mm. The assault is in the Krasnoliman direction.

MOD EDIT: Removed video of soldiers getting hit by artillery

The gun is stabilized and the turret has a modern thermal sight as well. It is pretty much hard to hit anything with the standard BMP-1 gun.

An episode of the battle of the Russian 114th brigade of the 1st Army Corps, which took place near a coal waste heap near the Avdeevka coking plant. The beginning of the fighting near Adeevka. The filming was carried out from a drone by military correspondent Andrei Filatov, who also commented, the ending of the battle was cut out, the waste heap was stormed by tanks and using drones. The video shows a military column moving towards the waste heap. The column consisted of four T-72B3M tanks, two BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, a Typhoon armored vehicle, and judging by the video, the new VPK-Ural armored vehicle was used; videos of all the equipment are on the channel. During the assault, one tank was damaged by unknown means, possibly by a drone. Another damaged equipment is also visible in the frame, but its identity could not be determined. You can also see in the video its use by the Ukrainian army. The second part of the fight was published in telegram, link below.

I've been wondering, when you see these FPV drones orbiting overhead of a tank or unit of troops and then an artillery strike happening. Is the drone transmitting GPS coordinates back to the operator who then tells them to the artillery unit? Or is the drone just being used to confirm the strike?

For the Ukranian side, yes that is basically what is happening
This "GIS Arta" system has been well-publicized

It's not so clear such a system exists for Russia, but their coordination seems to have improved over the course of the war, so something similar may have been developed.

A FPV drone does not have full 3D information with arbitrary relative positioning between themselves and a target if they're not literally right on top of it.

To describe 3D targeting information to a remote location, in general you need to know your own location and orientation, and the target's range, azimuth and elevation (r, theta, phi) for full 3D coordinates. That requires an internal compass and GPS to know own location and orientation. The camera can capture azimuth and elevation.

However, range to a target in general cannot be obtained with a simple image alone.

. That means the area of uncertainty is an elongated oval, small side to side but big along the line of sight. There's a few ways around this:

1. get closer to reduce the range uncertainty.
2. fire enough to cover the uncertainty oval
3.

Can't you solve/reduce this problem by having multiple images?
E.g. moving the camera/drone or having two cameras.
