The War in the Ukraine

The former Afghan Mi-17 is far too new to be of Soviet origin. These were offically bought by the US from Russia before 2014 for the Afghan Army. When the US fled Kabul, some of these where flown to neighboring countries and from there transferred to the US and then from there to Ukraine.

If I remember correctly, the majority of the afghan helicopters the US was going to give Ukraine were already outside of Afghanistan for maintenance, including several that were alreay in Ukraine.

He claims no Su-34 were downed recently. But that two Su-35 were downed. And the circumstances are still being investigated.
What I wonder is what is the current usage of SU35 over Ukraine? Just make patrols for the rare case a Ukrainian aircraft shows up?

Su35 is an air superiority fighter, its role being to fight other air forces, defending your own bombers and planes and so on.
I cant understand what do they currently do there. If you want to do patrols why not to use simply Su27 and Su30, that are cheaper and can perform the same task.

Is there any explanation?

The Su34 is a bomber, and the one that should drop the glide bombs that are demolishing Ukranian fortifications in the East (by the way the glide kits are the biggest game changer in this war)

The Su-35 is multirole. I have seen it being used to bomb targets occasionally. But yeah, if it was hit over the Sea of Azov, either it was a friendly fire incident, or they had to hit it with long range SAMs.

I wouldn't say there is just one single "game changer" introduced by the Russians in this conflict. You saw not just the UMPK glide kits being used, but also the Lancet drone, the Geran-2 suicide drone, and the Agriculture mine laying system among others.

The Su-35 and MiG-31BM with the R-77-1 and R-37M also proved extremely effective. But those were available before the conflict started.

Typically we don't identify Krasnopol usage from a ground third party POV although I suspect it's usage has been more prevalent but uncredited. Any accurate one hit shot of artillery could be a Krasnopol. Here the 238th Brigade hits more Ukrainian targets in Georgievka with Krasnopols.

Yes, the Su35 has the capability of drop KAB500/1500.

But what is the purpose of droping them from the Su35 that is the most expensive? Why not just to use Su34 or even Su24 for that purpose. Su27 for patrolling.
And keep the Su35 for the moment Ukraine will receive some F16 and so on.

I agree that all those systems were really important but without the fly kits for FABs (and increased production for KABs) to take places like Avdevka would have been a blood bath for Russia.

They fly escort/sead, as well as launch several kinds of PGMs.
While technically all russian fighters of 2000s gen have L-150 EW/Elint suite, Su-35 one is the newest(m variant) and more capable. So is it's FCS and onboard electronics in general.

Furthermore, it isn't like Su-34s deployed around Ukraine are terribly numerous in the first place.

This is why you need tanks to be much lighter. This Leopard got stuck in the mud near Pobjeda and had to be abandoned. The Russians finished it off.
