Missile strike in Ukraine: what is known at the moment

On the morning of January 26, the RF Armed Forces attacked Ukrainian military and energy facilities with cruise missiles. The first blows were delivered to objects in the Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhya, Kharkov and Cherkasy regions at a distance of 100 — 250 km from the front line.

Then the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation began to defeat objects in the depths of defense. At this stage, strikes were carried out at the locations of air defense systems and radio-electronic and air reconnaissance stations, as well as at the air-based areas of the Armed Forces.

According to the Military Chronicle, as a result of the launch of ground and sea-based cruise missiles, objects in the Kiev, Vinnitsa, Nikolaev and Odessa regions were affected.

In the Kiev region, according to preliminary data, the Kiev hydroelectric station was affected. Also, objects in the Dniprovsky district of Kiev were hit.

In the Odessa region, four large substations were immediately disabled by the attacks of cruise missiles: « Usatovo », « Lighthouses », « Malinovsky », as well as substation « Freak ». In some areas of the city and region, after the destruction of the substations, light and water supply were turned off.

For the third wave of impacts, barrage ammunition « Lancet » was used. The goals of the kamikaze drones in the Kharkov region were hangars, where the UBA was placed by the American M777 howitzers, Polish AHS Krab self-propelled units and their ammunition.

On the first paragraph, it aligns with this video, although Smerchs not cruise missiles were used.

Smerch strike on an ammo depot at the Kharkiv front. Allegedly, the depot contains HIMARS rockets and other MLRS ammo. Impact around 0:30 of the video.

Old WW2 tactic. They advance and take a position, forcing defense to come up and counterattack. Then they fall back and as defense reclaims the position, they hit back with artillery. Probing attacks also reveal where the enemy artillery is located. However, at times and often, the probing assaults can incur casualties on their own as they attract fire.

Counter-battery operations at Ugledar and Zaporizhzhya. Two entries by @milchronicles at Telegram. Videos of artillery pieces destroyed by Lancets recently might be related or collaborated with these events. Figures of human casualties I always personally take it with a pinch of salt for reports of both sides.

RF Armed Forces disrupt the counterattack of the Armed Forces in Zaporozhye: details

On January 24 and 25, Russian artillery and aviation attacked the positions of the Ukrainian army in the area of Gulyaypol, Zaliznichny, Gulyaypol and the Little Tokmachka — Orekhov in the Zaporizhzhya region.

According to the Military Chronicle, as a result of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, about 350 Ukrainian military personnel were destroyed and seriously wounded.

The largest losses were suffered by units of the 106th and 108th brigades of territorial defense, the 98th battalion « Azov-Dnepr » ( organization « Azov » was recognized as terrorist ), as well as the 58th motorized brigades. The movement of tanks of the 56th brigade was detected using radio intelligence and electronic warfare.

In the area of Zapasny and Yurkovka ( 15 km northwest of the city of Orekhov ), the positions of the 39th air defense missile regiment were hit. As a result of the 300 mm missile of the « Tornado-S » complex, the 9C18 RLS « Buk » was disabled.

These parts prepared a counterattack, but the preemptive strike of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation thwarted the plans of the Armed Forces.

Besides, thanks to reconnaissance and surveillance from drones in the Gift area ( 20 km north of Orekhov ) by the blows of barrage ammunition « Lancet » Polish AHS Krab and hangars with M777 and FH-70 howitzers were destroyed caliber 155 mm before they are deployed in combat positions.

The Armed Forces can no longer hide artillery under Ugledar: what is the reason

According to the Military Chronicle, as a result of the attacks of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on January 21 and 23, the 15th Armed Forces team lost under Ugledar in the area of n. p. Maximum of at least five M777 howitzers of 155 mm caliber manufactured by the United States and three FH-70 guns of joint Anglo-German development.

For the storage of weapons of the Armed Forces, former premises were used to grow livestock and granaries, from the territory of which Ukrainian artillerymen went out into combat positions and fired.

Due to a shortage of heavy equipment for transporting howitzers, civilian dump trucks and trucks, as well as HMMWV lightly armored vehicles, were used.

The limited cross-country capacity of these vehicles made it possible to place M777 and FH-70 howitzers exclusively near asphalt and dirt roads with good pavement. As a result, the Ukrainian military could not reliably mask the positions of artillery pieces that were opened by Russian UAVs and reconnaissance and sabotage groups.

After the discovery of 155 mm howitzers with drones « Orlan-10 » and « Leer-2 » howitzer « Giacint-S » was hit by the positions of the Armed Forces. For the defeat, artillery shots of special power of the OF-29 were used.

Due to the destruction of NATO howitzers of 155 mm caliber fire cover in Ugledar, the 68th infantry and 72nd mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces lost.

ATGMs and trees don’t mix well, Javelins even more so. As long as the operators are not close to the tree line, you basically don’t need to worry about Javelins coming out of the woods at you.

An interesting limitation that the Ukrainian defenders apparently were not aware of or neglected when choosing where to dig in that the Russians are exploiting ruthlessly.
TIL. Does this apply only to top attack munitions or all ATGMs?

The amount of drones and missiles shotted at surely wear down Tor missile system quite a bit. They are probably rotating them for refurbishment and they need replacements for loss units. Intercepting MLRS is probably burning missiles stock big time.

Didn't see any Strela footages for quite a while, they were using it a lot against UAV .

Newer systems are thrown in the melee both sides it seems.

At the Pentagon, push to send F-16s to Ukraine picks up steam

Kyiv has renewed its request for modern fighters in recent days after the U.S. and Germany approved transferring tanks.
A contingent of military officials is quietly pushing the Pentagon to approve sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine to help the country defend itself from Russian missile and drone attacks, according to three people with knowledge of the discussions.
“I don’t think we are opposed,” said a senior DoD official about the F-16s, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive debate. The person stressed that there has been no final decision.

However, Ukraine has yet to declare that fighter jets are its top priority, the official stressed, noting that the Pentagon is focused on sending Kyiv the capabilities it needs for the immediate fight.
But fighter jets may be moving to the top spot soon. Kyiv has renewed its request for modern fighters in recent days, with a top adviser to the country’s defense minister telling media outlets that officials will push for jets from the U.S. and European countries.
"If they get [F-16] Vipers and they have an active air-to-air missile with the radar the F-16 currently has with some electronic protection, now it’s an even game,” the DoD official said.

Big push for training

Others say the need for fighter jets is more urgent. Ukraine has identified a list of up to 50 pilots who are ready now to start training on the F-16, according to a DoD official and a Ukrainian official, as well as three other people familiar with the discussions. These seasoned pilots speak English and have thousands of combat missions under their belts, and could be trained in as little as three months, the people said.
