Misuse of engineering equipment and troops weighing against the Ukrainians in the defense of Bakhmut, according to @milchronicles.

Armed Forces of Ukraine in Bakhmut have a shortage of engineering equipment. What will this lead

to According to the Military Chronicle, from the beginning of November to December 15, the engineering support groups of the 54th and 30th brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the southern part of Bakhmut (Artemovsk) lost at least 15 units of special equipment necessary for the construction of fortifications, dugouts and trenches.

APU equipment was often misused. MDK-3 pit diggers, IMR-2 engineering barrier vehicles, and BAT-2 track-laying vehicles were converted into ammunition delivery vehicles and self-propelled gun emplacements. Because of this, the machines were often destroyed or damaged.

The shortage of engineering equipment is especially acute in the area of Experimental and Kleshcheevka. Here the Ukrainian infantry is gradually losing control over the first and second lines of defense. It is extremely difficult to prepare a third line of defense closer to city blocks without the right amount of special equipment.

At the same time, most of the engineering units in the city were retrained as ordinary infantry back in September. Many soldiers and officers from these formations have died or are in hospitals.

Freezing weather aggravates the situation. Due to the weather, the speed of digging deep trenches with the help of the remaining MDK-3 installations slows down by four to five times. The technology of digging trenches and trenches is not respected: the positions are not fortified and collapse inside after each shelling.

In addition, there is a shortage of building materials in Bakhmut. Wood, concrete, reinforcement, crushed stone and other materials to create new and strengthen broken positions, there is no one and nothing to import.

There's a lot of buzz in the media about a Russian Northern offensive from Belarus aimed at Kiev.

That's what my guess was for the winter and certainly there's been build up at Belarus, I'm curious as to why Zaluzhny is sounding the alarm now as there doesn't seem to be any new development in Belarus recently besides their snap preparedness inspection?
I don't think anything will happen, Belarus build up in itself may be a ruse. That ties up 70k troops in Kiev, who otherwise could have been on the actual front.

If these troops will be used, I think they will only be used to create situations where Ukraine has to feed troops into grinder. Any suggestions?

One must wonder if those Patriot missiles are going to make much of a difference when Ukraine is left without electricity/gas/heating/food and the like for more than a week without power after all these repeated bombings
Patriot does not exactly have a good record against projectiles. They should however work well against planes, providing more pressure on the Russian Air force.

Ukraine pre feb 24 had 100 S-300 battery, and around 300 launchers.

Most likelly they lost at least half, probably more of them.

Additionaly, the S-300 has lot of different radar for different functions, for early warning/search/target illumination / low level low RCS detection, all of them with 360 degree coverage and networked , the Patriot has a single radar for all purpose.

Means the patriot radar more versatile, but less capable in each job, and additionaly the radar has to be continously on to search targets, making easy to target it with anti radiation missiles, and considering the launchers are around the radar it makes easy to discover the whole battery .

And, finally, the Patriot can't work with the data coming from the S-300 radars.

Means the PAtriot inferior in quality , to make up the lost s-300 units Ukraine needs at least 100 times more unit

It means to replace the lost S-300 units Ukraine would need ALL of the USA patriot batteries in service.

I think many didn't realised that Ukraine had (has) the second best air defense system in the world.

PAC-3 do have Link-16 capability which would mean they can receive data from E-3's in the area, though, which would allow the batteries to operate without turning on their own radars.

Of course, that will depend on whether they do receive PAC-3 which is unlikely given that these are far more essential for the US strategy in the Pacific, so it is more likely they receive PAC-2's or even earlier variants.
