The Sino-Russian Strategic Partnership starts to get serious!

We saw similarly strong, perhaps even stronger, emotion-based problems between Germany and France not a lifetime ago.

And it took generations of diplomacy to resolve some of their differences, aided by two world wars and a common threat in the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact. However, that common threat has lessened, so we see differences growing between them that may increase over time and result in greater ill will and strategic competition.

Marriages of convenience are seldom stable over time, and Sino-Russo partnership wouldn’t be the exception that proves the rule. I say that because the centrifugal forces pushing the national interests of the pair apart are greater than centripetal forces holding them together. Russian population, by all accounts, is on a downward trajectory, especially in the RFE (Russia Far East). Combine that with huge and increasing disparity in economic output, which fuels military capability, one could reasonably say Moscow’s anxiety of being Beijing’s satellite would erode political/economic convenience over time. In the long-run, I see relations between the two less positive and more zero-sum.

And so what? There are other countries that are like you describe, but they co-exist even if the marriage is not as happy as one by blood. Because they choose peace over conflict. It's obvious the force for cohesion will be even greater than ever because of trade dealings as well as Western attempts to put Moscow to a corner. You can see it happening.

It took about a quarter of a century.

Perhaps overshadowed by other subjects, a very important piece of news from Dushanbe at the SCO Heads of State annual Summit.

The process for admitting new members is agreed, India and Pakistan have submitted their applications and could be full members within a year.

Iran likewise is looking to achieve the conditions to take its membership bid forward.

This is a good way to secure the Central Asian region from terrorists, plus I would like to see Afghanistan joining the SCO one day.

I would say that with all major neighbours/stakeholders in the same organisation, that an SCO security and stabilisation mission in Afghanistan is looking far more likely and that the mission would have a very good chance of succeeding.

France and Germany; I don't know, it is an endless seesaw - as noted by Julius Caesar from pre roman times; holy roman empire, napoleon, francro-prussian war, 2 world wars.... we shall see, it would be interesting.

Afghanistan already has observer status and Karzai has several times attended heads of state meetings of the organisation.

There are two extremely corrosive elements of Sino-Russo relations: Russian fear of being the junior partner to China, and Chinese resentment of current and past Russian racism.

Hyperbole much? How much more racism do the Chinese encounter now compared with what they get from elsewhere? Did the Chinese encounter racism from the Russians more than they did from the Japanese or British?

How "junior" could the Russians end up to fear partnering China? Do not forget Russia's per capita GDP is almost double China's. It has vast natural resources that China needs for its growing demands. Even with China's progress in technology, Russia is not going to become a backwater in technology.

The leaders, ministers, academia, and officials of both sides could utter googles of pleasantries and assurances, but it could still take generations to resolve the emotion-based problems, if that's even possible.

China actually faces more political problems from the US but you pretend to igore this simple fact. You also choose to ignore the international political co-operation and agreements between Russia and China since the Cold War.

The impression I got is that Chinese police are limited in what they can do and force they can use compared to US police.

Chinese people going to the US were advised by their counterparts there to not argue with the police, not to touch the police officers and when an officer tells you to put your hands up, you do as they say because they don't kid around. And if you get shot because you don't follow than that's that.

A few years age a Chinese national was asking for directions in NY and he decided to approach towards a police officer reaching for maps on him. The officer saw him and placed his hand on the gun holster. Seeing this he decided to turn slowly away and go ask someone else.
