The Chinese explanation said it's for "cooling, under '82' engineering/project". And it's a very "compromised" design.

There are many variants from J-8I to J-8F that have this design. What is the '82' engineering project? This was also tested on the peace pearl model.

Imagine if those late variant J-7 are donated to North Korea. Yum. Also imagine couple hundreds of pilots ready for J-20 and J-16. The stage is set for a very powerful PLAAF next year.

Has anyone heard about or know of the "Type 1791" radar for J-8H mentioned in this book;
