J-8II are useful for reconnaissance and can serve as decent BVR platforms. Later variants use the same radar as J-10A and can fire PL-12. J-7 on the other hand can only be used WVR.
Go with my drone wingman suggestion and that isn't a problem. Radar guidance can come from another platform.
Not that I am aware of.

Also take the claim that all J-7s will retire with a grain of salt. It came from a CCTV expert, not the military directly.
I agree, it seems strange that the PLA would retire hundreds of jets with airframe time with no obvious replacement in such a short period.

Would it be possible to mate AESA radars with J-8II's existing power generation systems?

A very old image of what appears to be a prototype of J-7II/F-7II, might be an export variant. Back then, the airfield at Chengdu Aircraft was still surrounded by farm land.

What a rarity, a J-7H from the 63rd Air Brigade - as per my list based at Mudanjiang-Hailang - with serial number 67343 clearly visible.

Does anyone know how recent it is even more since per rumours the 63rd AB was either said to operate J-7E, J-8F or to receive J-10C!

Does anyone know for certain which variant of the J-8 may first have used the PL-11 / Aspide missile?
