if Taiwan is truly getting ripped off, I believe don't buy the arms the US is going to sell us.

Rather depends what it is. If it's something Taiwan can make perhaps it's better not to get ripped-off. But if we're talking like the P-3C Orions better to get what you need for a higher price than not at all.

Besides with no real competitors of course the US can charge more. But I wouldn't assume Taiwan is being unfairly ripped off because of one newspaper report.

The P-3C's will need rewinging; I am aware that the cost to re-wing 10 P-3's is around $156 million dollars (judging from the last contract to purchase the Life Extension Kits).

Sorry for the translation. I gotta ask one to my taiwanese wife, my chinese skills are average and that s not enough to translate a military article efficiently.

It also deals with a restart of the military deal between France and Taiwan she said. And of course that would include... military aircrafts. :p

Seems like the French are reacting to Wen's snub by playing hardball. Heh. I wonder if Areva and Airbus will be in the news soon.

A firm like Areva is not willing to transfer all its nuclear technology without warranty. Perhaps they cannot conclude a fair agreement with China for now.

Chinese leaders threated europeans with a serie of cancellations in december. These can affect the deals concluded recently (with a lot of Airbus orders for the most part). But I do think this is not only a question of political concerns. China is hit by severe economic turbulances that are (mainly) undercovered for now. This country is now trying to help national (train, aircraft,...) companies to face the global competition with (too..)similar products.

In the other hand, I share the view that France did not like the recent chinese reactions over french interests in China, boycotts of the french products, along with the recent cancellation of the french EU/CN summit in Lyon (France).

The ROC defense industry has invested in producing 6x6 wheeled artillery, and XT-69/A1 tracked artillery. This is one area where they don't really need to import from France.

What would be really useful from France, but difficult to obtain due to its "big ticket" status, would be fighter aircraft, navy ships, submarines, and weapon systems. The ROCN needs upgrades to the La Fayette frigate and the Agosta 90B may fulfill their SSK requirement. It may even be possible to construct the Agosta 90B submarines locally, as Pakistan has done. But the chance of such sale and tech transfers is very low.
