This is getting big on Taiwan more than 100000 people protested against the government over the death of a army corporal. Last month a 24 year old corporal named Hung Chung-chiu with 3 days left in his mandatory service died as a result of a punishment he has recieved and the alleged coverup of his death. He had to do harsh exercises in the sweltering heat and died of heat stroke. The reason for recieving this punishment depending on the sources its either about him trying to uncover corruption in his unit to just taking a mobile phone with a camera on to the base which is forbidden.

Very sad thing. The kid only had a few days left and it looks like he was the victim of a non-commissioned officer making an example of him in an inappropriate and illegal way...who now himself will regret that course of action.

Contrary to what some may make of it, I applaud Taiwan for reacting. The protestors, who are understandable outraged over this, are making a difference.

Economist Article said:
18 personnel have been charged by army prosecutors. A sergeant has been charged with abuse and faces life imprisonment for forcing Mr Hung to perform “cruel” physical exercises that went beyond “what the ordinary human body can endure”. Others were charged with meting out an illegal punishment, since Mr Hung’s offence should have earned merely a reprimand. But protesters insist that only the small fry have been charged, and that high-ranking officers should take responsibility. Whether they will is unclear.

The government has been caught off-balance. President Ma Ying-jeou and his cabinet quickly agreed to protesters’ demands for a commission to investigate miscarriages of justice in the armed forces. The furore helped claim the scalps of two defence ministers in quick succession. Taiwan’s parliament has also amended laws to transfer jurisdiction of most criminal cases involving servicemen in peacetime to civilian courts. It is a milestone of sorts for a young democracy.
Seems like quite a few people are paying pretty big for this. Consequences from the Sgt all the way up to Defense Ministers.

Unfortunate incident , but it also shows prevailing anti-conscription feelings of Taiwanese people . This doesn't look good for Taiwan's future as semi-independent entity because such relatively small country cannot hope to defend itself with just professional army without its citizen-soldiers . Basically , in case of war , if PLA manages to establish beachhead it would be all over very soon . Ordinary citizens would not use armed resistance , and professionals would not risk their lives defending lost cause .
The time for war between China and Taiwan has passed. No beachhead is necessary. Eventually the US will accept that that Taiwan returned to China without a formal end to the US occupation of the island.

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) Three female enlisted soldiers were sent to Taiping Island on Thursday, marking the first time that female soldiers are stationed on the small islet in the South China Sea, according to the Coast Guard Administration (CGA).

The three women were trained at the R.O.C. Army Infantry School in Fengshan in the southern city of Kaohsiung.

A fourth female, an R.O.C Marine Corps lieutenant, is expected to be posted to Taiping Island at the end of this year, the CGA said.

Taiping, the biggest of the Spratly Islands, lies 1,600 kilometers southwest of Kaohsiung.

At the end of May, all of Taiwan's 100 soldiers and officers serving on Taiping were men, according to a CGA official.

This is my own Take.
Taiwan is good at building Rifles. They have developed their own assault rifles for decades taking the best of the AR15 and AR18 weapons and converging them into one system. This became first the T86 carbine and then the T91 which is a farther upgrade with a barrel just 1.2 inches longer it is a popular export weapon. a few years back word came out of a new member of the T family the XT97 then it seemed to pull a Houdini. Now it seems to be back nd almost ready for prime time.the latest version has a refined fully adjustable folding stock with Cheek rest, a Ajustable gas piston system, fully intigrated Rail system and all the goodies of Modern assault rifles like the FN SCAR, Remington ACR, CZ bren A2, Taurus new carbine, the polish MBS, HK G36 updates, Beretta ARX160 and AK12.
looking at it it seems to me that The weapon may be aimed first to replace the T86 in the carbine and compact weapon role with full replacement later. The Weapon has SF written all over it.
It seems possible that it may also have calibre change as a option. XT97 was said to be offered in 9mm, 5.56x45mm and rumored for 7.62x51mm ( I doubt it) now this new version may have under gone some expansion in that area to take all the popular rounds so 5.56 Nato, 6.8x43mm SPCII, 7.62x39mm M43 ( its still selling well dispite it's age Armenia for example just bought ARX160's chambered for it.) possibly 9x19mm NATO or a specialized round like the 7.62x35mm Blackout for suppressed roles.

Taiwanese Company Champion Auto Industry unveils "The Jet" a new 4x4 armoured vehicle.
RliCDAy.jpg

Champion-Auto Industry has developed the Jet 4x4 armoured vehicle to respond on a gap between heavy armoured vehicle and 8x8 personnel carrier. The Taiwanese army does not currently have a 4x4 armored vehicle of this category that may be useful for all-terrain conditions in the country. The prototype shows at the TADTE 2013 is a personnel carrier variant able to carry six soldiers. The modular design supports the integration of equipment and systems as per the customer requirements.

At TADTE 2013, the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition, ROC Navy (Republic of China - Taiwan) unveiled for the first time a land-based version of the locally designed and produced Hsiung Feng III (HF-3) supersonic anti-ship cruise missile. The mobile launcher is a 6 wheeled trailer carrying 4 canisters. Each canister can launch one HF-3 missile.

ROC Navy unveils "High Efficiency Wave Piercing Catamaran" at TADTE 2013 show
QxE1I5v.jpg

With a length of 60.4 meters this corvette size vessel is designed for littoral operations. A sign on display at the show indicated:
"In order to face the increasing threat across the Taiwan Strait, ROC Navy has developed a new type of Littoral Combat Ship, High Efficiency Wave Piercing Catamaran (WPC). This ship design increases ship mobility, and provides for greater stealth technology, larger capacity, and better adaptability to environmental conditions. This new class of ships is designed by Naval Shipbuilding Development Center (NSDC) and Ship Ocean Industries R&D Center (SOIC). The High Efficiency Wave Piercing Catamaran (WPC) is currently under construction by the Lund-De Shipbuilding Corporation."

So, 16 x HF-II and/or HF-III SSMs, one 20mm Phalanx CIWS and a DP, rapid fire 76mm naval gun.

I would have either made provisions for both a 20mm Phalanx and a SeaRAM, or perhaps just the SeaRAM for CIWS. And what, a 40 knot speed?

Anyhow, depending on how many they build, this could be a very strong addition to their navy.
