Pan Zhanle swam slowly for his 200m freestyle, and then swam the second fastest 200m split for the 200m freestyle. He was clearly conserving energy for his 100m freestyle and the 200m freestyle relay. The Korean winner in the 200m freestyle, also swam the fastest split in the 200m relay. Pan Zhanle could have won the silver in 200m freestyle and maybe a bronze in the 200m freestyle relay. By giving up the 200m freestyle, they won the 200m relay.
Yeah His 200m swim in the preliminary race was weird. It was really slow. Not sure what to make of it.

But might not be simply deliberately saving energy for the relay event. Could be just overconfidence and decided to take it easy. Sometimes swimmers after breaking a world record or swimming an ultra fast race, kinda misjudged or mistimed the following day race in the heats and bomb out. It does happen.

No, I don't think what you're saying makes sense.
Pan Zhanle swam slowly for his 200m freestyle
Why did he swim at all if he didn't want to advance and he wanted to conserve energy?
, and then swam the second fastest 200m split for the 200m freestyle.
Correct, he was probably good for silver if he were able to advance into the finals, but it looks like he made a mistake and did not qualify. Not qualifying on purpose, swimming slowly on purpose, makes no sense.

No, this is just your conjecture. The 100m freestyle was on 2/15. Athletes don't need multple days rest for sprint events like the 100 or 200m. Do you do sports? It's not the longer you rest the faster you go. Sprints take very little out of you and after a few hours, you are up to max ready to go again.

Yes, if he had qualified.

No, how fast you swim your 200m on 2/13 has no impact on how fast you swim your 200 on 2/16. That's 3 bloody days of rest for a 200 meter swim!!

If you have an interview where he or his coaches said they did that, then I'll take it because they know more than me. But if you're just imagining what's happening and guessing, I'm saying it makes no sense because athletes don't need to rest that long in between sprint events.

How do you explain that Li Bingjie also dropped out of her event? She was conserving energy for the 200m freestyle relay.

Which event? How many meters was the swim and how long did she have to rest until the 200m freestyle relay? If it makes sense, for example, if she had to swim an 800m race 2 hours before the 200m relay, then I'll agree. If it's some 100 meter dash 3 days before the relay, then no.

Dude, do some homework. I asked how many days, did you check? The individual freestyle 200m for women was on 2/13. The relay was 2 days later on 2/15. So that's 2 days rest for 200m swims and she would not have been affected. Specifically, she swam the qualifiers right after her 1500m silver but then left off for a teammate to fill in for her at the finals (and that teammate came in last). This says to me something went wrong and she wasn't feeling well. You don't make athletes swim for other athletes who have no chance of winning if they were trying to conserve energy.

Oh my GOD, Dong Zhihao just won the men's 200m Breaststroke! I can't bloody believe it. I thought the American was gonna win since he dominated the semis yesterday. Dong was lagging very badly, like 6th place or some crap, then exploded in the last 50m and took second. I didn't think he could win today because usually if you've left things up in the air that far, then you've given your all while the American seemed routine and unstressed. Just now at the finals, a Dutch guy led the race pretty much the whole way and my hope was for him to stave off the American from that gold medal but Dong once again exploded in the last 50 meters and overtook everyone for gold! He overtook the American pretty much at the last turnaround (50 meters left) and left him for dead but Dutch guy held his lead to the final <10 meters! Our little bugger's only 18!!

I fucking blew out my left arm fist pumping in celebration at the office! Shit that's gonna suck when I try my next shoulder press at the gym but what a race!!!

Speaking of celebrations, once again, white coach in the Chinese team going nuts like his kids just won. He's got to be getting an awfully hefty bonus per gold medal for him to be that happy.

LMFAO look at his Weibo screen name. Now everyone in China knows he is a Weeb.

Jesus Christ. China has equaled the almighty USA in the total gold record at a single world championships. This is absolutely insane. China is not only good at diving and artistic swimming, but also regular swimming as well. Hopefully this success continues at the Olympics this year. It would be great to get more golds than the US. The motherland is not only militarily strong, but also athletically strong. Makes me soooo happy hahaha. This is not the weak man of Asia anymore.

The Chinese cheated by using wind tunnels and machine learning to improve swimming stances.
