Lieutenant General
China's Defense Minister during his recent visit to the US has stated categorically that it will carry on its oil drilling in waters around the Paracel Islands, as historically these waters and those in the South-China Sea (about 80%) belong to China. The US can say what it wants, BUT there is nothing the Obama Administration can do about it. China, has remarked that the US should MIOB (Mind its own business). That also goes to the others who may try to interfere. Very-Putin like approach, but China is much stronger as it is "A Rich Country with a Strong Military" at this time. However, "Strong Language & Aggressive actions" will hasten Defense Cooperation of like-minded Nations in Asia, & this I believe this may happen, with probably Japan playing an important role.

Not likely because they each have their own territorial disputes with the OTHER Southeast Asian nations as well, it's just that ONLY the Chinese one gets published in the western media.

Here is my reading of China's deployment of that oil rig near the Paracel Islands. President Obama just a few days before finished up an Asian tour (Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines) were he reassured those countries and others that the US would standup to Chinese assertiveness in the region and on their behalf. Now China is putting that claim to the test. And since the US hasn't done anything about the current situation has helped to put some serious doubts in the minds of the regions leaders about Obama's and America's commitments and the promises made to them.

I understand that the oil rig that China deployed is a "floating oil rig" that would be removed when her mission is completed and won't be a permanent feature near the Paracels. It is said that the oil rig will leave in august. But by then China has achieved her political aims.
I think we (include many Chinese) are all know that Massive Rig went to that's not for oil, but political drilling (But we will never know what Chinese really want, except they break their brain for us to see).
And that was put Vietnam in this situation, play this game with China.
If Vietnamese government don't come with it, just sit there, and wait for Chinese leave, they will got dead-shoot on international field and in domestic.
Even if Vietnamese govt can believe PRC's goal was test this or that, can we believe that they will left after complete their operation with Rig !? What if their goal turn in next phase, or next plan with the Rig.

We saw example about Scarborough shoal, when Philippines retreat their ships. Chinese always like to play "de facto" (first) then come with explain (terra nullius, undisputed territory ...)

P/S: well, I went to some international forum, and almost Chinese never said like that. They all said their rightful actions with the Rig, that's their territorial water, Vietnamese was crying and make situation become complex ...

Lmao, why so touchy? Why would you so gleefully use negative diction such as 'threaten'?
That jet is on standby in case a Vietnamese captain gets overzealous and takes actions that might endanger the lives of Chinese sailors; if China really wanted to 'threaten' Vietnamese vessels, they can easily task half a dozen frigates to show what real ramming is. Either that or China can mobilise a few divisions on the Vietnamese border.
Why you so touchy !?

What would you want, when you send the strike fighter flying at low altitude over ships below in a very tension area !?
For greeting Vietnamese friend come up !?

We know using 4000 tons ships ram on 400 tons ship was not "threaten" with some Chinese, just a game. Hope you can think like that when you're on 400 tons ship... :))

Everyone...particularly you, Climax,...settle down.

Nothing is going to be solved on this thread. I do not care which side you are on.

SD is a place to professionally discuss issues, not to emotionally make claims.

We have people from both sides on all of these issues and we will not tolerate name calling, arguments, shouting, or emotional carrying on, no matter which side you are on.

We know that there are strong nationalistic feelings...however, this is a Sino Defense Forum. We discuss many nations militaries in an effort to make the overall forum more enjoyable and interesting. However, it is a professional forum where we discuss military/defense activities dispassionately.

It is not a political forum and it is not a place to air grievances and try and settle them.

If any member wants to try and do that...go somewhere else. If you try and do it here, you will be reminded, warned, suspended, and then banned unless you can stop.

Discuss the military aspects, the defense aspects, of what is going on.

READ THE FORUM RULES OF BEHAVIOR.

Thanks

Another thread indicated it carried a jamming pod. Probably used to help blunt communications for a coordinated attempt to reach the oil rig.

That's why it be wise to heed the moderator's instructions and refrain from commentary. Nothing can be proven or disproven with merely cropped up pics.

Taiwan will not cooperate with China on South China Sea: official
2014/05/15 12:21:20

Taipei, May 15 (CNA) Taiwan will not cooperate with China on issues related to South China Sea territorial disputes, Foreign Minister David Lin said Thursday amid anti-China protests in Vietnam that have affected Taiwanese businessmen operating there.

"There is no cooperation between China and us on South China Sea issues," Lin said during a hearing at the Legislature's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.

In response to questions on remarks by Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, that China has asked Vietnam to protect Taiwanese people in the Southeast Asian country, Lin said that "we don't accept such remarks."

China regards Taiwan as part of its territory.

Taiwan has made it clear to the Vietnamese government that Taiwan does not belong to China, Lin added.

The riots erupted earlier in the week after Vietnamese crowds took to the streets to protest a Chinese oil-drilling venture in an area of the South China Sea also claimed by Hanoi.

So far, more than 100 Taiwanese-invested companies in Vietnam have been affected by the riots and two Taiwanese have been injured, Lin said.

The developments in Vietnam and the Taiwanese government's response measures to the riots were the focus of Thursday's hearing.

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Tsai Huang-liang suggested that the government negotiate with Vietnam on allowing Taiwanese businesses to hang Republic of China national flags at their offices to better distinguish them from Chinese companies.

Lin said the ministry will try to work on that angle.

The Foreign Ministry is ordering 20,000 signs for Taiwanese companies to use as a protective measure, the ministry said in a report to the Legislature. The signs say "I'm Taiwanese" and "I come from Taiwan" in the Vietnamese language, designed to help Taiwanese avoid being mistaken for Chinese.
