After watching this video, I wonder if the Chakri Naruebet could have retractable wheel chocks installed and they simply operate conventional naval fighters instead of V/STOLs? Such a shame that carrier hardly ever is used to launch fighters.

Flight deck is to short . Forward position on INS Vikramaditya is not very practical . Yes , you could launch fighters (as we can see from the video) but only with 50% of fuel and maybe 2 or 4 light AAMs . Buying 6 or 8 Mig-29Ks for Chakri Naruebet , only to operate them with minimum of their capabilities would be a gross waist of money , IMHO .

I think in the case of the Thai carrier, the fighter would have to launch from all the way in the back. But you're right, it's not a value proposition. But it also at least makes the carrier a carrier.

I found this quote on some Indian forum , IMHO it is a bit optimistic :

The MiG-29K power plant consisted of two RD-33K by-pass engines with complex digital control system. The maximum thrust was increased to 5,500 kgf, the maximum afterburner thrust reached 8,800 kgf. Unlike the RD-33K turbojet mounted on the MiG-29M, the shipborne aircraft engines featured an emergency mode, during which a temporary (short time) thrust increase to 9,400 kgf was possible. Thanks to the emergency mode, an aircraft with the take off weight of 17,700 kg could take off from the first starting position (in this case the take off run was 105 m), and a 22,400-kg heavy plane could take off from the second starting position (in this case the take off run amounted to 195 m).

Chakri Naruebet is often called Royal Yacht , but in reality it is a solid helicopter carrier . Operating Harriers proved to be problematic so ski-jump is a bit of wasted space . Otherwise , ships of this kind could be very useful in ASW , relief operations , even in small scale commando operations .

The R4 is a direct clone of the M4A1 made by Remington military to USArmy spec. for a short time the Army was even going to buy them but Colt launched a protest and still ended up loosing when FNUSA under bid them both. I find it odd that the Philippines chose Remington as Ferfrans is a local maker in the Philippines and makes a top of the line product. the only reasons I can think of are either A the Typhoon damaged them. B they could not produce in quantity needed. C not enough kick back.

Singapore will for the first time buy brand new submarines. The Defence Ministry (Mindef) said in a statement on Monday that it inked a deal with German defence contractor Thyssenkrupp Marine System on Nov 29 to buy two Type 218SG vessels.

The contract includes a logistics package and the training of Singaporean crew in Germany. The new vessels, together with two second-hand Archer-class submarines, will replace four ageing Challenger-class submarines.

Mindef said that the Challenger-class vessels, which were built in the 1960s, will be progressively retired from service. The new vessels are expected to be delivered from 2020.

The decision to buy the new German-made submarines follows Defence Minister Ng Hen's comments in March about Mindef's plan to replace the Challenge submarines with new ones.

many are already guessing based on the designation that this might, MIGHT be a variant of the type 216 sub concept offered by Thyssenkrupp. A AIP sub that is close in size and mission scope to a SSN.
