Junior Grade Rommel Rodriguez said yesterday the three units of AugustaWestland (AW-109s “Power”) helicopters were turned over to his unit last Sunday for testing.“All the three AW-109s were delivered at Villamor Airbase, Pasay City. Two of the helicopters flew to Sangley Point Naval Base in Cavite for testing. Hmmm...would be interesting to see if the Philippines purchases these shore SSM batteries from Japan, eh? With the closer ties they are forging, and with Japan looking now into the export market...and with the use of these weapons clearly a defensive measure for a regional friend/ally...I would not be surprised at all.

And coming so close to Japan itself announcing the same type of measures for its islands...well, hmmm.

Well if ittruely is the type 88 then Philippines is going to get a bargain deal out of it since Japan is at the moment trying to upgrade introducing the type 12 so there should be some type 88 surplus going off line.

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Industry
16 December 2013

The Philippine Navy (PN) is planning further upgrades for its two ex-US Coast Guard Hamilton-class cutters, PN spokesman Lieutenant Commander Gregory Fabic told IHS Jane's on 17 December.Contracts to modernise the two vessels, which are described by the PN as patrol frigates, are expected to be tendered next year and will feature upgrades for navigation, propulsion, communication, surveillance, and weapons systems.IHS Jane's understands that the PN is also seeking to equip the vessels with an anti-submarine warfare capability and surface-to-surface missiles, although funding restrictions are likely to determine the full extent of the modernisation programme.Lt Cdr Fabic said the planned upgrade will enhance the PN's capability to protect and secure its assets in and around the country's exclusive economic zone, in which tension has remained high in recent years due to territorial disputes between the Philippines and China.

PT DI delivers airplanes, helicopters to three institutions

Arya Dipa, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Archipelago | Wed, December 18 2013, 8:06 AM

State aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (DI) handed over on Tuesday a number of aircraft to three government agencies.

PT DI delivered three CN-295 medium transport airplanes and six Bell-412 EP medium transport helicopters to the Defense Ministry during a ceremony at its facility in Bandung.

Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro attended the ceremony as well as the Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Moeldoko and the National Police chief Gen. Sutarman.

In addition to the Defense Ministry, the aircraft manufacturer also handed over helicopters to the National Police and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

Budi Santoso, president director of the aircraft manufacturer, handed over the three CN-295s and six Bell 412 EPs to the Defense Ministry’s Defense Facilities Agency head Rear Adm. Rachmad Lubis.

“The simultaneous delivery of aircraft to three government agencies is a very proud moment,” Budi said in a media release.

“This is PT DI’s commitment to fulfill the needs of locally made major weapon systems.”

Budi added that the Defense Industry Policy Committee (KKIP) had been working not only to supply the TNI but also other government agencies with locally made aircraft.

The police received one Bell-412 EP helicopter, which will be operated by the Air Police Directorate, while Basarnas received two AS365 N3+ Dauphin medium-weight helicopters.

Budi said that the contract with the police was signed on July 1 while the contract with Basarnas was signed on Nov. 28, 2012.

The Defense Ministry ordered nine CN-295s in 2012 and has so far received a five of them. The remaining four airplanes will be delivered in 2014 and 2015.

The Air Force’s 2nd Squadron will operate the CN-295s as replacements for the ageing Dutch-made Fokker 27 Troopships.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Army is using the Bell 412s for transport and assault missions.

The R4 is a direct clone of the M4A1 made by Remington military to USArmy spec. for a short time the Army was even going to buy them but Colt launched a protest and still ended up loosing when FNUSA under bid them both. I find it odd that the Philippines chose Remington as Ferfrans is a local maker in the Philippines and makes a top of the line product. the only reasons I can think of are either A the Typhoon damaged them. B they could not produce in quantity needed. C not enough kick back.

Most Likely it's 1 of the Above ...
