Whatever the PLA-N might have inc. their Carrier Group & Stealth Aircraft etc., if any of these are used in the Scarborough Reef Conflict against the Philippines, it clearly shows to countries in South & East Asia that China will use ALL its might to crush anyone that does not "kowtow" to its demands & rights. Now most of us will realise why we need the US to stop aggression by any BIG power against a very small countries like the Phillipines, Vietnam & the other claimants in the South China Sea. Cooperation & good relations among Asian countries could be just fallacy. There is still time for China to be diplomatic & settle the South China Sea Territorial disputes at the International Court of Justice. Get respect & not try to impose on its will by FEAR. Imperial Japan tried to do it in Asia in WW II but FAILED miserably with disastrous consequences.

Simple truth is: we all need to get used to now there're 2 bulls in this china store...
There's not so much different from everyone is dancing along with US tunes, the difference is that China have been a broke-arse sorry state for the last 60 years who now finally broke out and made its assertion...have you not forgotten what happened to those countries and gov't/regime who deviate from US' grand scheme of things? Probably the difference is that nobody could do it like the US, with such skill and finesse.
Besides, why don't you think a bit on how that speck of a rock got so much attention all of a sudden? Who and what made China have to play hardline this time, when in the past similar incidents only earned a few lines on everybody's newspapers and just a few "airwave spats" by China's Foreign Ministry, then it'd drop out of sight completely before you know it?

Pl look at the map of S.E. Asia and the South China Sea, there is sense to be made re: territorial boundaries. How far is Scarborough Reef from Philippines compared to Hainan Island (China)? However, let common sense prevail & settle it under UNCLOS - and final decision at the (UN) International Court of Justice (Hague). I believe this is FAIR - & accept the court's decision. Don't base on "Ancient History". If Ancient History is to be used, then Italy can claim many of its Ancient territories because of the Roman Empire. Also the Ottoman Empire (Turkey), Persian Empire (Iran), British Empire (UK) etc. etc. There will be no end but arguments based on Ancient History. So let's be factual & realistic - Go to International Court and be FAIR. The decision will be accepted by all parties & there's TRANSPARENCY.

If there's truly something called "fair" when comes to states' affairs, we'd have a hell lot less wars...but you must know the truth, despite how little history Singapore education system teaches...if "fair" was any bit reliable, Singapore won't need to build one of the best military forces in the region, too.
In the spirit of stay in topic, one should notice how silent the other ASEAN nations are in this...in any case, if the Philippines really want to play this game, then it's high time to spend a lot more money to modernize the armed forces, or perhaps high time to welcome back the US to have a permanent military base.
