Time will tell. But I still prefer the US with all its warts, it is still a Democratic country. Ask Vietnam why it has become closer to the US military (naval wise) now. Why so? after all the US were considered aggressors during the Vietnam War. Also why are countries still wanting the US Forces to station on their soil - Australia, Philippines, South Korea, Japan etc. etc. Only common sense will tell you why this is so. You are wrong in your analysis, perhaps you have not experience real autocratic rule, or perhaps you condone it.

Yes, the US is democratic, domestically! I don't see any voting among various nations on what the US should do internationally... The US admits and proudly maintains its lone superpower status. What do you think "superpower" means? It means unchallenged power. Isn't it the opposite of democracy? Please enlighten me when was the last time that the US had to give up its planned action because of objection from other nations. Not that I can remember... Isn't that the opposite of what democracy is?

As I have stressed many times before, whether a country is democratic domestically has no bearing on how it will behave internationally. Every nation has its own interests. Domestically, a certain nation may vote to decide what these interests are. However, when these interests collide with other nations' interests internationally, the domestic democracy will NOT guarantee other nations' interests will be protected. Let's face it, a domestic democracy means that the interests of the said nation's citizen is protected. When these interests collide with those of other nations, the domestic democracy WILL make sure that the interests of its own nation is put before others. That's how democracy works...

So aligning yourself with a democratic nation is no different from with a authoritarian nation. Both wants to protect its own interests to its fullest potential...

The best bet is NOT to depend on anybody and develop your own defense. The history teaches us that you will get burned when you become dependent upon anyone else...

Re: ASEAN military news

I'm amazed at the Philippine love for American when America thrashed the Philippines putting down a nationalist rebellion around the turn of the century. China never invaded and colonized the Philippines, they never fought a war against Filipino guerrillas.

You have sense of "humor" Schumacher re: Hollywood - don't you like them too? entertaining aren't they? Anyway, anyone living in South East Asia & East Asia should be interested in the geopolitics of the region, not only naval or military but also political assertions & unnecessary flexing of muscles or bullying of smaller nations.

1) There's a great kinship between the Filipino people and Americans. there are many Filipino-American social groups in the US. particularly in Southern California.
2) Millions of Filipino immigrants have migrated legally to the US.
3) Thousand of Filipinos serve in the US Armed Forces..particularly the US Navy where there are 2nd, 3rd and even 4th generation Filipino sailors serving.
4) Thousands of American and Filipino troops suffered and died during the Bataan Death March.
5) Filipino guerrillas fought the Japanese awaiting the US to return to the Philippines.
6) The US liberated the Philippines from Japanese occupation.
7) The Philippines was granted independence on July 4th 1946.
8) Billions of US dollars is sent to the Philippines as remittance by Filipino-Americans living in the US. Even more is sent by US charities yearly...

....and there's tons more....

Hollywood and most other movies are indeed good fun and it's especially humorous when some get confused between entertainment and real world geopolitics.
Glad you like my sense of humor.

I think what you mean to say is that the Philippines was successfully colonized (in all but name) by the US crushing the independence movement of the time during the Philippine-American War, after the US took over as boss from Spain as a result of the Spanish-American War.

As BD Popeye pointed out, since then the shared experience of WWII, the US granting the Philippines independence, and Cold War politics had helped the two countries be on good terms.

My question was largely rhetorical. The legacies of colonialism run deep between the Philippines and United States. However, I'm surprised more Filipinos aren't bitter that the United States strongly supported Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos whose administration is largely responsibility for the extreme poverty and dysfunctional nature of Philippine politics.

Which one is stronger? Chinese coast guard, aka maritime surveillance, or the Filipino navy? Let's exclude the PLAN.
