Sea => Navy
31 => J-31
Nail on the board => Certainty (decided). It is a Chinese idiom "板上钉钉", meaning 100% certainty.

The poster of this picture is a person who has made lots of schematic drawings of J-20 and future bomber.

Thanks. Could've the post been deleted because OP made a mistake or that the information wasn't accurate to begin with?

everything is possible. I myself is still not convinced by any rumors, although on the surface J-31 seems to be ahead in the race (if there is a race).

I'm not sure what it means. Could you interpret this for non-Chinese speakers?

From left to right, there are three pictures, sea, 31, nail on a board.

It represents, naval 31 is now a sure thing (Chinese slang). It has to be FC-31 because the person posted the message is a military fan. This is not from an insider. I'd say the reliability of this is pretty low.

That does not mean FC-31 can't be the carrier jet. If it does become the naval jet that would be fantastic. Personally I am worried without a full scale investment the engine would be a weak spot. And unlike airforce jets, naval jets without a good engine is not usable.

Who said anything about engines

2nd prototype made a smokeless flight with 2 x WS13 engines

Overall there is actually no obstacle to J-31 for naval operations
The obstacle is that after evaluation, neither the PLAAF nor the PLAN deemed J-31's performance satisfactory to merit public investment with government funds. We don't know why; if it is a fixable flaw, it may be corrected on future prototypes to redeem the aircraft for China's armed forces but if it is a problem with base design that incremental improvements cannot address (satisfactorily), then we will never see this bird enter service.

Quite frankly, my enthusiasm for J-31 is low. If the Chinese military has dragged it's feet on this design so badly, then I'm afraid that even if it eventually becomes accepted, it's still only borderline satisfactory. I don't drag my feet on things that are fantastic; I do it when I've got no other choice so I have to settle.

Are you sure? He's well known, at least.

I brought up something similar. The whole program, as I understand it, doesn't make sense in some ways.

I certainly see your point of view however if not J31 what else is there in the works to power PLAN's future carrier force? surely J15 cannot be the only bird for the entire 2020s and most of 2030s especially with 3 or 4 carriers coming online in that time frame!

PLAN's counterparts would be F35B/Cs. I doubt they would be pitching Flankers again these birds.
