You know what I think.

1. SAC's 5th gen is gonna be a multi role stalth fighter in the same weight class as F-18E/F. It is gonna be superior to F-35.

2. It is gonna be PLAN's future carrier born fighter as well.

there will be competition between SAC and CAC for the naval fighter like for the J-20.

IMO surely not ! There won't be - at least in the near future - no carrier-borne heavy weight fighter.

Yepp ... like I said before !

I would say let's sit down, take a cup of good tea and wait until that bird is hatched !! :)

^ the confusion is with the phrase "like the J-20" -- I think you meant to say "like the J-XX". Saying J-20 conjures up images of a heavy weight stealth fighter.

If J-21 is indeed twin engined, it will already have one area better than F-35 which is redundancy in power plants. As for performance, who knows. It might have marginally larger internal payload like KF-X CAD images have shown (2 SRAAM and 4 MRAAM) from its twin engine configuration.

But if J-21 is what we're saying it is, it will not be the size of super hornet. Remember, the F-18E/F is in the weight class of F-15 and flankers.

As for the whole SAC monopolizing the naval fighter thing, I expect there to be a naval fighter competition in some stage, and by the sounds of it SAC is aiming for the medium weight with J-21. If PLANAF has a tender for naval 5th gen it'll logically be for medium weight first (J-15 will have the heavy weight category to itself for years to come), and by then SAC will be well into development with its J-21, whereas we've heard nothing from CAC about a medium weight 5th gen of their own. If the "competition" is similar to J-XX where both institutes made "proposals" rather than a fly off. If so SAC will be much ahead with a much closer to finished product.

Who knows maybe CAC can subcontract for some of J-21's components like how SAC is doing for J-20. Or maybe they can compete for a naval 5th gen (or even 6th) contract in a few decades time. But the medium weight 5th gen looks quite in SAC's favour if their plane is what it's said to be.

So from what I gather, after reading the recent posts on this topic, is that Shenyang (SAC) will be coming out with medium-sized Stealth Fighter, in the weight class of an F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet and would compliment the J-20? If that is the case, then would these fighters be solely intended for just PLAAF, or would they also be considered for Carrier ops as well?

medium-sized Stealth Fighter: seems to be the consensus
weight class of an F/A-18 E/F: difficult to argue that
compliment the J-20: if PLAAF or PLANAF get it why not
then would these fighters be solely intended for just PLAAF: why you think that? the J-21 could perfectly suit PLAN future need for Carrier ops.

Only reason why I thought that was because the development of fighter, based on which service it will be inducted into, takes shape in that direction. Of course, then there are 'after-thought' changes made to the fighter to configure it for a different role. Perhaps that is the right way to do it and the wrong way is to dedicate one type for one class, basing its entire development on that track. We all know how it fared for the hyped F-22 Raptor.

But it always is the case and of course, PLANAF should and ought to have a J-21 Stealth Fighter to carry out ops. Why shouldn't it, when considering U.S Navy will be fielding the F-35s in the next decade or so.

So yes, I agree, it would suit PLAN's future needs for Carrier Ops and I hope we see its development and induction take shape.

Assuming the J-21 is built for PLANAF, with carrier operation in mind, it's logical they would proceed with building a larger fighter rather than a medium sized one since a larger carrier fighter would better suit the requirement of better range and payload compared to a medium sized fighter.
