Shenyang FC-31 / J-31 Fighter Demonstrator

Why J-31 only has one prototype, unlike J-20 with 4 prototypes so far

I believe it would need more than one prototype

My guesstimate is that there would have to be at least 5 PTs. 31001 to me is a 'Naval' prototype. The air superiority or multirole J-31 would be slightly different.

of course they would, so that means the 31001 is actually a "proof of concept" or tech demonstrator more accurately, its flight test program has been much more limited and much more "sporadic' in frequency. While I would prefer a slightly larger aircraft , say SHornet rather than Hornet, it may well be that it is the lo in the old Hi/Lo concept, and thus best served as a smaller aircraft?... I believe it will likely be built as a Naval aircraft, but as of yet, there are no concrete RFPs, so we shall see?

Even as the F-35 is in LRIP, you can see numbers of aircraft assigned to "test"????:p:p:p

YES and NO, especially since actually I don't think that there will be a specialised air superiority J-31, even more since the current 31001 is for sure not a naval prototype, since it lacks the folding wing and tail hook.

IMO aircraft 01 is simply a proof of concept prototype, maybe comparable to the British EAP in relation to the €F or the YF-22 to the serial Raptor. But that will require new decent engines most of all.

I agree with You that in the end if the decision was made to develop this into an operational type there will be more prototypes - IMO even more than 5 - and in the end there will be a true naval multirole version and a land-based multirole version. I don't think that there will me to seperate multirole and air superiority versions even more for both the PLAAF and PLANAF.

As such like Bill Sweetman once said, the J-31 could be in fact the better JSF - maybe to be called a Joint Sino Fighter ;) - since it can leave the STOVL-requirement aside.

Having a naval version of the J-31 would be awesome

They have the experience from the J15 and J15S and all the developmental knowledge which they can apply to the J-31 programme

In addition J-31 would make for a fine export aircraft for Pakistan post 2020

I hope Sino-Pak can secure some exports before 2020 with the Super Mushak, K-8 and JF-17 Block II package

:D ;) Is this confirmed ??? ... and what about the other "interesting" rumours about a J-20 in the static display as well as the Y-20 ???? .... and I can't be there. :(:(:(:(

Pinkov will be there though... Some photographers on CJDBY are planning on pelting him with rotten eggs since he stole their photos for his publication.

Do you see Sino-Pak J-31 arrangements derailed by China's improving relations with Iran and Pakistan's problems with the same?

I can see these last 2 comments could escalate to some argument. Let's stay away from the politics here please.
