Maybe the armed forces don't want it and they are now going to pitch to potential customers?

NYET! more likely trying to pull in the allies and share costs and "connectivity". If you read the interview with General Hostage that Jura posted, one of the true strengths of the F-35 will be operating in conjunction with our allies, or "fusion".... I would imagine selling the J-31 domestically and exporting them to her close allies would be a very serious desire in light of US allies acquiring the F-35 in significant numbers. Even if only to the Pakistanies initially, it would be a public relations "coup", and being able to offer it to others might pull more "friends" into the "close friends" community. In my opinion, it would be a huge mistake to assume that because they are trying to export this airplane, that they will not buy it domestically "in numbers" as General Hostage was saying about the F-35.

Certainly an interesting option PAF to replace our F-16s in the long term.

No doubt Aeronaut, read my post, I really think the idea of sensor fusion and data linking is to valuable to "miss out" on. If the Chinese could get a friend or two to open up to their own export fifth gen, that would open doors to more "friends" buying more aircraft? Sensor Fusion and Data Linking are "revolutionary" in their implementation???

PAF is a very progressive thinking air force which has always kept up with the cutting edge of technology. There is an internal debate happening in PAF already about the battlefield application and utility of 5th generation systems. Pakistan calculates its threats according to a software database called 'Threat Matrix'. If our threat level goes high when India brings in the T-50, the PAF will certainly look for a 5th gen platform. I think it would make good sense for PAF to join this program because it uses the same class of engines as the JF-17s which will make it easier and cheaper to operate a sizeable fleet. Also, i have heard 'rumors' that the sensor fusion developed for J-20 will be watered down and installed in further blocks of JF-17s too. If that materializes than it means that if PAF goes after J-31 and sensor fused JF-17s than our entire fleet would have brilliant situational awareness and unparalleled connectivity which the IAF can only dream of since they would be operating jets from 3 different suppliers who won't allow their sensors to be fused with other vendors for the fear of spying and technology concerns.

Engaging the afterburners in the very first prototype is indicative of the trust pilots and engineers have in the machine.

Good Post Aeronaut, and I love your screen name, kinda Jules Verne thinking, but I agree, Pakistan has a good understanding of Air Power, and air superiority over the modern battlefield.

I personally want PAF to have an advantage over IAF in across the spectrum sensor fusion. Our pilots can outmatch the Indians just like the past, however a blanket fleet sensor fusion distributed between all PAF fighters will give them the extra situational awareness they need to craftly conduct the air battle against a numerically larger foe. Although, i think, given the availability of finances the F-35 will be available to PAF, however the J-31 would give us a liberated fleet from American strings. Heck they made us rebuild a new Air Base to keep the Block-52s separate so our Chinese buddies can't take a 'peek' at its technology. :p
