It's possible Mr. Kendall meant the J-31, referred to it only as a "stealth fighter" and the reporters assumed that Chinese stealth fighter equals the J-20 (the transcript of the testimony isn't online yet, so we can't check for now).

Much more likely, that he was referring to the J-31, I think folks are rather certain the J-20 will not be exported.

Nah, it's just the angle of the picture made it look like it.

Actually, he's right, the right nozzle is open as opposed to the more constricted left nozzle, possible single engine landing test, to see how it reacts to asymetric thrust, it is odd and I noticed that myself. I really like your Nah! it is an outstanding expression of confidence, but in this case, something is up with that nozzle.

I believe this to be the case as well or it could simply be the timing of the exact moment when the picture was shot where the dilation of the left nozzle hasn't opened up to the right side yet. This is a normal thing. In a lot of twin engines planes they are not in symmetry all of the time.

Look at this Rafale at 0.15 on afterburning takeoff.. you'll even notice the left turbine kicks in slightly before the right one does!

Is this the M or F? That was a short distance for a takeoff!

Has it got individual nozzle control look at the left nozzle it looks narrower than the right nozzle?
Control of the inlet, if that is variable, and nozzle are necessary to make it possible for the engine to operate optimally. So nozzle control is connected to the engine control and it functions independently from that of the nozzle control of the other engine.

Mod on CJDBY thinks that this might be proof of official endorsement of J-31. We'll see.

To admit I thougth that there was already a few months ago a report about an official PLA-commitment, sadly I could not find the link anymore.

Anyway even if I don't have any full insight into the structures of SAC, CAC and AVIC or so, I for myself highly questioned the possinility of developing such acomplex type simply as a private venture !

Chinese arms industries is very different from those of NATO countries, especially that of Uncle Sam. They are highly centrally controlled. Everything is tightly choreographed by the central planning body of the PLA. Although many arms of the crown companies do have publicly traded stocks, but they still answer to the government and the military, not their shareholders.

So I highly doubt that J-31 is something out of Shenyang's own will without the blessing of the PLA.
