Re: Casual talk...Have fun!
I was just reading a article in Der Spiegel about the German troops in Afghanistan which involved some strange cultural practices.
extract as follows
"And when an Afghan soldier feels truly at ease with Major M., he could very well take his hand and stroll through the camp with him, holding hands. This is the custom in Afghanistan.
The major has no objection. He is a practical man who knows that wars are not just won with gunfire. And he is a man who is prepared to overcome his culturally ingrained opposition to men holding hands so that this war can be brought to an end, both for Afghanistan and for the Germans."
I once had a naval friend in the NZ Navy 60's to, mid 80's, he actually crewed the ist leander class frigate back from the UK to NZ. Well during general conversation he often addressed us with love, like in "thanks Love" etc etc. When we jokingly suggested he had been too long in the navy (apologies popeye) he said it was something he picked up while living in the UK, where in certain areas it was quite common to address males as well as females with "love" we grudgingly accepted his explanation.
I've often seen photos and in real life Asian Women going around holding hands, no sexual connotation here, just normal behaviour,
this has got me thinking is anyone else aware of any other strange but bemusing and innocent cultural behaviour?
Sometimes things are lost in translation which can be amusing, not so long ago I bought a electric hedge trimmer, made in China of course, It carried a warning pamphlet with a list of no no's, of which one was, dangerous to use for trimming toenails.
Has anyone seen anything which is humorousness when lost in translation.
