Western standards of beauty differ. There were some that fit the Chinese/Asian sense of beauty but most of the ones I saw did not fit the Chinese sense unless you put make-up on them.

I agree, they are not pretty, and there could be explanation for that. One of the possibilities is that the prettier ones simply did not sign up. The premise is that their attractiveness already gave them better opportunities elsewhere. Another possibility exists where the prettier ones don't have the physical requirement and were all flunked. The premise is that they are pretty because they lived a more comfortable life, where they never have to move 20kg around 10 hours a day, five days a week.

A little off topic but since we are talking about women, I

I do remember one defence website offering a thread on Chinese Women from all over China, some of the women were rather exquisite. Was it this forum or some other. Perhaps someone could start it up ?, give me a beautiful women over a gun or whatever anyday.

True, however all those men are Marines and have to apply for that type of duty. All the US services have ceremonial guards that have certain physical requirements.

So then there are Marines just for PR purposes? I don't really see the difference.

Other commentray in general...

What's to assume these men are "actors?" Because all 1.3 billion Chinese are short? I stand 6ft tall and there are people don't believe I'm Chinese or even Asian. I've actually had people think I'm white. Not because I look white. It's because they can't get passed anything other than a short little Asian. Funny because the majority of Asian men I know are as tall or taller than the average American male.

All this because of that little girl singing at the Olympics? Ironic the discipline shown by the drummers at the Olympic Opening Ceremony were all soldiers which brought about a whole other set of negative conclusions by Westerners. Were those guys fake soldiers too? Gotta remember the Chinese fire drill. The Chinese can't be that disciplined even if they're soldiers.

Largest standing army in the world and they can't find enough soldiers that fit the bill?

Hollywood loves to promote their movies as an example of America. Do they really portray America realistically? Why is San Francisco made out to be basically all white when it's not. Even the liberals speak quietly of how there are too many Asians in San Francisco. Is it their ideal image of San Francisco? Why is it in a hospital drama on television there is only like one or two Asians working in the hospital. Ever visited a hospital in a major metrpolitan area? The staff doesn't look like the ones you see on TV. Did they kill off Asians in Star Trek? Notice that there are more outer space aliens than Asians on Earth?

I know that's Hollywood, right? The military would never think in those terms and wouldn't resort to ideal images. Pat Tillman anyone? You know what I've seen America represented correctly and I'm not sure if the military releases their pictures. It was at the height of the Iraq casulties where some news broadcasted pictures of the soldiers that died. Some them wore glasses. Some were round looking. Some looked like the kid that sat over next to you in school. Some even looked like they were immgrants. And even some were Asian. You don't see any of them in their PR.

Sorry to do this but I find this sort of petty to even bring up especially when the US military is guilty of it too no matter what people think. Because it's not exactly the same it's different? It's all about presenting an ideal image so it's the same. This not about fake soldiers. This is about attempting to portray China in general terms because this is a superficial subject so why bring it up if one wasn't trying to use it as an general example of something?

You mean participating in the old Chinese/Asian habit of being the misstress or No2 No3 wife?. I here the purtanical politburo frown upon such practices, but surely what was good for Mao is good for the rest? I wonder how rich one would have to be to indulge in that type of lifestyle, I could emigrate back to China, on the grounds of rediscovering my roots(sorry for the pun):)

the younger generation Chinese kids are pretty tall for some reason. i grew up in Canada and standing shamefully at 170cm, and all my cousins in China are around 6' or more, its quite bizzare

I was just asking a question and I received an answer. And I appreciate it. I was not attempting to create any controversy. I'm sorry if it was perceived that way..

I'm looking forward to the parade.

No. I meant they were pampered at home since a small age and never have to come out to work. :coffee:

I just saw a recriutment add for the Marines on TV where you see a long line of them at different iconic US sites. Guess what? They all were the same look, height, and build too. Not everyone in the Marines or any other service all look like that either.

As a Chinese, I too don't seem to find anyone in those pics particularly attractive. They look cute because of the short skirt, which, in my opinion, is inappropriate in the military.

Yep, I'm seriously annoyed by comments like this too. I'm 5'9", not tall at all, but people always comment that I must be tall among Chinese. The fact is I was always among the shortest ones in my class when I was in China.

One good example would be my cousins and wife's cousins. They are all Northern Chinese. I have two male cousins at about 5'9"-10" and 3 others above 6' (6'2", 6'3" and 6'8"). And all my wife's male cousins are about 6'1" and above. One of them is 6'5". even girls are tall too. My wife is 5'6" and she is the short one. The same goes with my female cousins as well. Most of my Chinese buddies are Northerners. And they are all tall and wide as well. One time, 3 of my buddies came to my work and one of my colleagues saw them and was shocked to see "so many big Chinese" :nono:

I think this is because most of the Chinese who came abroad are southern Chinese, who, on average, are shorter and smaller in stature. Westerners see a lot of them because Southern Chinese in the coastal provinces began to come abroad in the 1700's. Most of the Northern Chinese are significantly taller and bigger. Because most of the Northern China is inland and opened to the outside later, Westerners don't get to see them a lot. Plus, most of the Chinese who come abroad nowadays via academia, which means most of them are nerds (like me). As the saying goes, bigger brain, smaller muscle. And it's a lot harder for the non-academic "muscles" to come out.

Re: 60th Anniversary National Day Parade

I'm not so sure Southern Chinese are actuallly shorter than Northern Chinese. (This may be another of the western media's preconception?) It depends more on the different areas than 'North' and 'South', I think. Anyway, people are growing taller by the generation, probably because of better nutrition (or the use of growth hormone in farm animals!).
