Socialism is a dirty word in America..........enough said.

Actually, it's an evil word. Yep. One of my colleagues is a resident surgeon. He has some strong feelings on socialism. Specifically, he hates taxes and how the government would tell him how much he should make. We always tease him by saying "yeah, poor "so and so" (his name here) only gets to make $1 million a year. How can a guy support his family with only $1 million? He's got his 10,000 sq ft mansion and all of his 10 mistresses to support":D

How is he going to see all 10 mistresses in a week? There are only 7 days.

He sees two of them per day on weekdays and gets all of them together on the weekends :D:D

Seriously, he's a good guy (or a lame one, depending on who's talking). He's still a resident, which means he's making same amount of money as rest of us and works 3 times longer than attending doctors. And he has only ONE girlfriend who's actually about to finish her residency and start making the big bucks. But no one says a guy can't dream about his 10 mistresses. And the number of his dream mistresses has grown from 2 when I met him to the current 10. It seems whenever he's frustrated with his work, he adds another mistress on the list.

This actually brings up another point. We have a serious shortage of doctors in the U.S. The way the hospital solves this problem is to work the residents like slaves with 48-72 hour-shifts. And who can keep a clear head when you have to stay up for 3 days straight? I see these poor residents in the hall all the time. You can definitely tell what stage of their shifts they are in simply by looking at them. If a guy looks fresh and energetic, he's only starting his shift. If he/she looks like they just came back from a war, he's about to finish his shift. I would say "hi" to some of them when I see people that I know, and more than once, they would give me this bland look. It sometimes takes them a few seconds to recognize me.

How can a person in this condition see patients??? Then accidents happen and mistakes are made, law suits follow, price for treatments goes up to cover the law suits and insurance goes up... Bad cycle.

Of course, there is the new law prohibiting residents from working more than 100 hours/week. But there are so many tricks hospitals have to get around the new law. As for the residents, you don't ever want to refuse to work extra hours since any word from your attendings will decide your future and the hospitals know it. And the pay for the extra hours is amazing. How does $1000/day sound to you? How can you say no? They give offers like this to get people to work on holidays. I think the $1000/day is the pay for Thanksgiving/Christmas, not too shabby.

If I didnt know any better I would have thought you were talking about NZ:rofl:
I actually think that problem exists all over the world. A have a friend who does locums in hospitals and she would get all of that a day for a 3day working week.and shes very happy, when she runs into me she thanks me because I talked her out of being a journalist.
My biggest rant about these junior doctors who get this money still claim its not enough seeing they have large student loans to pay off (avg about $60,000) I think because they earn an avg of $70,000 they can pay it off easily. All they have to do is live like poor students for another year:D

Just touching on the topic of socialism briefly, I dont have a problem with providing a safety net within reason, rather that than an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

On a lighter note, THere are many doctors in my extended family and I once jokingly suggested to them that I would not require medical insurance as being family and all that, they could sort out my medical problems for free. While humming and ahhing over my approch, they finally agreed, suggesting the kitchen table would be the best place for said operation.

About the book, I've never seen it (literally, not only never read it, but never seen the actual book). I think back in the 80's and 90's, Chinese people had such a low self-esteem (I guess from the shock on how far they'd fallen behind), a number of Chinese authors actually got famous for blasting Chinese people and culture. According to them, nothing and absolutely nothing about Chinese (language, food, clothes, religion, history... you name it) is good. They claimed that we Chinese are genetically inferior and culturally backward and that we are destined to fail anything and everything we try. I mean it's one thing to be self-critical and down-to-earth about ourselves, but blasting, or more like humiliating, your own culture like that? that's just too much...

:eek:ffI got it out for my wife to read before her Sojurn to Beijing in Jan.It was recommended by the people blogging on the T"Telegraph" The Shanghai based correspondent for the British newspaper couldnt understand why the Chinese there tried to continually rip you off when it came to renting a apartment.

I haven't read a book for 20yrs, prefering talking books instead. But flicking through it I came to a section on how noisy the Chinese were. I could always hear Chinese people having a conversation 50 paces away and I thought the author would provide the answer. But to no avail.

By the way how cold does it get in Beijing in Jan

I think it becomes annoying when you can't understand what they are saying. And that annoyance makes you believe that they are too loud. My 2-cent...

It was not too bad when I lived there (-10 to -20oC). Then again, that was 20 years ago. If the current "global warming" trend holds true in China, Beijing should be a bit warmer. The weird thing is I never remember seeing snow in November. Then Popeye posted some photos of snowing in Beijing. So there goes my memory of Beijing...

It is true that Chinese people are louder than probably westerners (I believe most east Asian people talk relatively loud) - When I was in the cinema watching 2012 there happened to be a group of chinese people behind me and I noted they were loud.

But that's definitely not a bad thing, it's just less socially accepted in the west and adds to the ammo anti chinese and anti asians have in their arsenal to blast them with.

Btw, for "the ugly chinaman", I personally don't know why any self respecting chinese person would read such a book... I just googled it and the sypnosis's I got were all quite infuriating. I can only imagine that a chinese person might write such a self hating book because they have no self respect or respect for their heritage at all. It's probably due to the fact that the West dominates the world and it makes the authors feel better to diss themselves and distance themselves from what they actually are.. Gah I hate chiinese self haters :(
