Re: Movies in General/ Star Trek etc etc

I think that is just the Ugly side of Car culture which hapaneds in ever country that becomes dependent on the Car for the bulk of it people. In my home town of Wichita Kansa motorist have litle respect for pedestrians. People in cars will honk and yell at pedestians like me for no reason other than having to take a few extera seconds to turn a corner.

Wow, that's hardcore. Here in Houston, most people will wait patiently for the pedestrians to cross the street if you use the intersection. If you simply jay-walk, you will understandably get the horn.

For those pedestrians who intentionally slow down in the middle of the street just to mess with the drivers, they get special treatment... One time, I was the first car at the light and this guy was doing "snail" at the intersection, I simply shifted to neutral and stepped on the gas. Of course, the car won't move, but the sudden roar of the engine scared the $$$$ out of him :D:D:D

P.S. if you want to do something like this, make absolutely sure the shift is in NEUTRAL!!!

What you want is one of those piercing horns found on those diesel/electric train engines or something as loud and sounds like a ships horn, that/ll frighten the cr-p out of them. Man I wish I had one at times

Generally I find Americans to be the most courteous of drivers, but they sure dont know how to use roundabouts

In Berkeley, CA, you'll have pedestrians stop in the middle of the crosswalk to start up conversations holding up traffic. Also I hate those people who will stop and double-park their car in a traffic lane waiting for someone while they could've pulled over into the red curb or driveway right next to them. But noooooo... they're already breaking the law so they might as well block traffic and force people to make lane changes while they're at it. That happens all the time.

Re: Casual talk...Have fun!

Here in San Francisco, we have a lot of cases (very common among the old lady who came from China 10 years ago) of folks staying home when sick until things get really bad before they head for the hospital. So bad that the Mayor propose for free healthcare to convince the folks to come in while it was still a little bug. I don’t think it happened. But if we have the old lady-from-China, I don’t see why she won’t visit the Chinese doctors….. although some of them aren’t that great and the old ladies probably doesn’t know enough to properly make the medical tea. (preparation, timing, and heat are very important as you might know.)

Eating away organ…wt*?!
I think it becomes annoying when you can't understand what they are saying. And that annoyance makes you believe that they are too loud. My 2-cent...

Naw, I don’t think so. My parents and I tend to understand the words of the loudest party in restaurants we visit, but rarely do we find them disruptive. But on the buses, we usually get competition from folks with roots South of the border.

But he says "Over here we have crossings, to make it easier for cars to run over people" I think thats just a humorous way of saying 'Drivers dont give way to anything over here, they even ignore pedestrians on crossings"

He must have never been to the other 166 countries around the world…

Ah Q? My parents didn’t understand it either. They thought he was just a under-informed person who laughed along just because others are.

Talking about manners, I do think that people coming from mainland China lack certain important manners, like talking loud in public and making loud noise while eating, etc. I do believe that we can blame the communists for that, though. Before the 80's, anybody with proper manners would be considered capitalistic and condemned since these were the people with wealthy families and proper education. And bad manners were considered a good thing since they indicate poor family background. We all know how important it WAS to being a poor person back then. And before long, everyone thinks having those manners is a good thing and no one actually knows what the proper manner is. So these people may be rude and they are doing it not because they are selfish, but because they don't realize what they do is bad.

I think it also has a lot to do with roots also. A lot of city folks were originally farmers before Mao and manners came after efficiency and other things. I remember this man from a tourist group who talked really loudly and smoked WHILE WALKING AROUND.

P.S. if you want to do something like this, make absolutely sure the shift is in NEUTRAL!!!

OK to do in Park also?

but they sure dont know how to use roundabouts

Nope. For California at least they are not even in the handbooks. They can’t really sustain American traffic after all.

If you go to San Francisco, you’ll find drivers in opposing traffic stopping in the middle of the street just to talk! Even bus drivers!!!

Well the Chinese werent alone in that Look at the French Revolution where the rich and aristocratic got the chop, thats even worse than China
Good manners will come back I hope, Its always nice to see good manners'

One good example would me. Since my mom comes from a wealthy and well-educated family, she's been well aware of all the proper manners and makes sure (yes, she still does it) that we (that's my sister and I) behave like a lady/gentleman. And I always got laughed at at school when I lived in China. Since I didn't make any sound while eating, people said I was girlie...

I was brought up in much the same way by my sisters

When I opened doors for girls, they said I was kissing up to some hot chicks I admit that there's some element of that too

You can blame technology for bringing in central locking, now you can't admire a girls nice legs as she swings them in when you open the passenger side door on the car for her.:D
