The big elephant in the room is the actual terrain that this canal is supposed to traverse,

The points at which the canal turns is situated on that 20-30km stretch of the Negev mountains that elevates 800 - 1200 meters above sea level. That elevation will need to be leveled to 0m.

Off topic: you can see from this topography why low-flying Houthi missiles/drones aimed at Eilat can be difficult to detect, track and intercept. Eilat is the southern tip of Israel at 8m, surrounded by major elevations.
There are already a canal propose for refilling dead sea which also pass Negev and Eilat. There are narrow passage that is about 500 meters above sea level in Negev.

New President Marape said that under his watch, however, the government would not consider foreign funding for major projects unless there was the promise of a "soft, soft landing".

Now:
"We would like the Australians to come on board," he said.
But Australian banks have shied away from financing the fossil fuel PNG LNG project stake.
Kumul Petroleum is holding talks with banks in the U.S., Europe and Australia, but its managing director Wapu Sonk said talks with Chinese banks had gone further.
"It's progressed to a point where it is mature," Sonk told Reuters at a Papua New Guinea resources and energy conference in Sydney.

These type of countries all end up being beggars to China.

China and Vietnam are set to agree this week on upgraded rail links and other infrastructure, possibly including digital projects, officials said, in moves that would bring Hanoi closer to Beijing.

Saudi-China investment event witnesses deals worth $25bn

Trade and economic ties between Saudi Arabia and China are expected to further strengthen, with the recent investment conference in Beijing witnessing the signing of more than 60 memorandums of understanding and agreements valued at $25 billion.

The China-Saudi Investment Conference on Tuesday witnessed the signing of agreements in various sectors, including energy, agriculture, tourism, mining, and financial services. Additional fields included logistics, infrastructure, technology, and health care, according to a press statement.

The investment conference was conducted on the sidelines of a visit by Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih to China.

A notable deal signed during the conference was in the information and communication technology sector, where the Saudi Esports Federation and Chinese esports tournament operator VSPO signed an MoU to promote opportunities, cooperation, and participation in eSports for $8.5 billion.

Meanwhile, China’s Oriental Energy Co. and the Kingdom’s Ajlan & Bros Holding Group Co. signed another agreement to explore areas of collaboration in manufacturing worth $7.5 billion.

In the energy sector, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Investment signed a deal with China’s state-owned CRRC Group to develop opportunities in the Kingdom covering project development and manufacturing of renewable energy and sustainable mobility worth $2 billion.

The investment conference was attended by top regional heads, including representatives from Saudi Arabian Oil Co., also known as Aramco, Saudi Basic Industries Corp., and ACWA Power, the press statement added.

During the conference, nine Chinese companies, including Huawei, Dahua, China Railway Construction Corp., and China Communication Services, received their licenses to open their regional headquarters in Saudi Arabia.

Additional companies that received licenses were China Harbor Engineering Co., China Civil Engineering Construction Corp., BGI Group, Nuctech and iMile.

A day earlier, Saudi Arabia’s stock exchange signed an MoU with the Chinese Shenzhen Stock Exchange to enhance collaboration and explore new opportunities in several areas, including joint listing and financial technology.

In September, the Saudi Tadawul Group and the Shanghai Stock Exchange signed an MoU to bolster cooperation and promote mutual development.

At the time, the agreement focused on dual listings of exchange-traded funds, initiatives related to investor relations and infrastructure development, as well as fintech, environmental and social practices.

In November, the Saudi Central Bank, also known as SAMA and the People’s Bank of China signed a local currency swap agreement worth $6.93 billion.

According to a press statement issued by SAMA, the three-year agreement “has been established in the context of financial cooperation between the Saudi Central Bank and the People’s Bank of China.”

China’s central bank said that the swap agreement can be extended after two years by mutual agreement.

It's objectively crazy how some US analysts can still say in 2023 that Saudi Arabia (and all the other Sunni-majority countries too) is closer to them than it is to China. China is their main importer, exporter (including industrial machinery, everything Saudis need), science and technology developmental partner, infrastructure developmental partner, and source of FDI.

China is also increasingly the biggest FDI destination for Saudi funds, etc. From a more fundamental perspective, one would think that the Chinese political system is also way closer to them than the US system is. And also, China is the only one who can provide them with lasting peace with Iran and its proxies. Not to mention how the US went in full retard for Israel recently.

I can't rack my brain and think of where possibly is Saudi Arabia benefiting more from the US than it is benefitting from China. Maybe only in regards to old US weapon system maintenance (which is the majority of Saudi inventory), because regarding new US overpriced weapons, Saudis simply aren't getting any thanks to other orders coming from the Collective West, other direct US vassals, from all around the world, and the US's meager industrial capacity. They remain cordial to the US and leave those bases only because they fear US hard power in my opinion.

quite surprised that nobody here talking about the upgrade of Sino-Vietnam relations.

very significant in my opinion, it seems like China may be offering to build standard gauge rail to Hanoi for free. it would quite a strategic play on Vietnam's north south divide if true. By boosting the north's infrastructure and linking it to China, the latter is trying to ensure that China-friendly factions in Vietnam will have a hold on power for a while, and even if they were to lose it, China can at least retain influence in north vietnam.

It seems like some very important deals were made during Xi's visit. Xi definitely met the next CPV leader (Nguyễn Phú Trọng's replacement) already, I think signs point to Võ Văn Thưởng. We don't know enough details to guess further.

I agree the visit is important

The current Vietnam party leader is probably more friendly to China than other choices.

But realistically, getting vietname completely integrated in china’s supply chain is a good thing
