India vetoed Algeria BRICS+ entry at France's request: Report

There are still some on this forum who refuse to believe that there is a snake in the BRICS and SCO organization. Hopefully the Chinese and Russian "farmers" have learnt their lesson and won't give the snake anymore chances.

Lol, you are upset that 1 country got vetoed? Maybe you should realize that India and Brazil are not China's vassal state and have their own goals and objectives. And then, maybe you will be satisfied that they added 6 new members! Five of which will be which thankful toward china and reward china greatly.

And the final one, well we will see what happens with the Argentinian election. But that was just to keep Brazil happy really.

The more this organization looks like a legitimate entity that's not dominated by china, the better it is for its future relevance.

India isn't acting in the interests of India, but France (who still consider Algeria their colonial territory). If they are prepared to do the same with France, why not the UK with Argentina, or elsewhere? It means the west has a set on the table as well.

If things like this continue I don't see what the purpose of BRICS is. In fact I'm not entirely sure now.

Nonetheless, India's veto against Algeria led to a dispute with China during the voting process, which reportedly almost caused the “ failure of the Johannesburg summit.” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also opposed Algeria's entry, according to

I think Xi is probably thinking the same thing. During the first fews days of the BRICS summit, there were a lot of western rumors about Xi missing the opening event.

China’s Xi unexpectedly skipped a key BRICS event. No one is saying why

Brian Hart, a fellow with the China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Xi’s absence is “highly unusual,” adding that Chinese leaders rarely go off script at high-profile events like this.

“It seems that something pulled Xi away from the meeting. It could have been a health incident or perhaps a pressing matter that required his attention,” he said. “It is also possible Xi skipped the event for some other reason – perhaps in response to developments at the summit.
Taiwanese media surmised the same, Xi was probably very annoyed and negotiating in person to get even six new members approved.

With "friends" like India in BRICS, who need enemies?

hmm, if you have never considered India a friend of China, why would you do that now?

That's the wrong way to look at it.

How is it in India's interest to allow any expansion? If Brazil doesn't want expansion, why would India?

It's pretty clear that China wins the most from large expansion and then Russia after that. SA kind of just goes along because it needs China. Every incoming nation will basically be supporting China's goals. Even if BRICS by name is equal for everyone, but it's clear that China is the leader here.

From what I can see, China basically steamrolled through everyone in pushing through most of the countries it cared about. As for everyone else, they can get in next round if this round doesn't work out.

And that means Algeria, Venezuela & Kazakhstan if they want to get all the energy producers in there.

That's a strange leak and a strange story. It doesn't help India in any way and would probably have repercussions in their outreach to African countries in general. And it pushes the new countries in BRICS even further into China's camp. It also decreases trust in India basically from every non-western country in the world.

Whoever leaked that story (and I feel like its out of character for China or Chinese to leak this... it demonstrates ridiculous political savviness that I haven't seen from China) really wanted to drive a dagger into India. Like this is something that will echo.

In 1960 the Soviets opened Patrice Lumumba University aimed precisely for students from developing countries. In 1992 it was renamed as People’s Friendship University, but the purpose was retained.

This year the Patrice Lumumba name was restored during the Russia-Africa conference where many of the African delegates had actually graduated from the said university. And tellingly, surprisingly many of the current African elites can still speak Russian.

Global South educational programs are an effective tactic and a lot of leaders in places like Africa and Arabic countries had a background of studying in Russian universities when younger. Certainly they were not guaranteed to be top universities but they did fill the educational gap in those poorer nations.

China should take note of this approach.

At least BRICS is just economic cooperation to withstand sanction, but it's worse for SCO since it's about securities. I can't find India membership benefits any other members right now.
