They need to be sure that the left side doors are firmly closed ! That's some gun blast !
They have regulations where they have to wear vests during live firing, plus aren't those vests been commonly seen in regular troops nowadays too? the headsets are kinda new, I don't remember seen them before they issued their type21 uniform, that or I'm just not paying attention
IMO artillery guys should be prioritized for ear protection compared to regular infantry, simply because they're operating with the bigger bang. A quick lookup usually states infantry rifles around 150 to 160 decibels, while the US Army states 155mm Howitzer can get to 181 decibels.
Having ear comms will also help with coordination on the firing sequence.
What troops have depends on what they're doing. Since artillery troops that are photoed with their artillery are almost always using it, of course they would be seen with the standard equipment more.
I never understood why both this one (122mm on a Mengshi III chassis), and the new 4x4 truck based 122mm (shown below) are both in service.
take a wild guess maybe one can be airlifted on Y-20 or Y-9？not how big the mengshi version is.
Most probably the new 4x4 is capable of operating in High altitude area
