I never understood why both this one (122mm on a Mengshi III chassis), and the new 4x4 truck based 122mm (shown below) are both in service.

AIUI track version (161) carries more ammo but Mengshi model (171) has better mobility. So horses for courses really. Depends on the terrain a particular unit would be operating in which one they get.

Brigade logistics, maintenance especially would be very important. Does anyone know if the 161 is similar to another vehicle in widespread use in the PLA?

Isn't it just using the MV3 chassis? So it's most similar to the 5 ton supply trucks that the PLAGF uses. If you are asking about role, the closest equivalent would be the towed PL-96. Basically the PLAGF just fused the truck that tows the artillery gun and carries the crew and ammo together. PLZ-07 is more mechanised artillery support.

Just trying to emphasize the role of logistics in decisions. If they can share the major running components of the better for those logistics.

Keeping similar mobility is an important factor too.

Don’t quote me, but maybe it will help your research.
I believe I read somewhere that 161 was designed specifically to fit 2 per Y-20 and 171 was to be able to be transported by helicopter.
