Wow...not many takers on this one.

I'll give it until this evening and then start with some hints.

Bd popeye, you awake up their in Iowa Dad, thats a little bitty wheel?

I was not a surface sailor. I was in aviation. I worked on aircraft and on the flight deck. I assume that's the pilots wheel.

Well at least I don't feel quite as ignorant, I came up with Zip, obviously with the phones and no computers it looks a little dated, but newer than WWII. It was interesting to note how boring present bridges look! I guess I was expecting something like a submarines helm. I am learning and you guys come up with such neat stuff.

Okay, here's the 1st hint, it was commissioned in the late 80s to early 90s and is still in service today.

Okay...next hint. It is on a type of amphibious asssault ship...now, folks should be able to find it.

EDIT:

Actually it's not a Zubr like I first thought, but instead a San Giorgio Class Landing Platform Dock (LPD), from Italy

The big ones like Whidbey Island or YuTin class I was first contemtplating just felt too big, the pic looked like the bridge would be rather small really. So Zubr was my next best guess, but the entrance to the bridge was wrong.
So, looking further for an amphib with a rather small bridge, I stumbled across the class named above. I think that's it, really.
