Well, the basic hull form is in fact the Krivak III which does date back to the USSR. However, this last one is modified somewhat and is similar to the Talwar Frigates (whch are also based on the Krivak III hull) that the Russians have built six of for the Indian Navy between 2003 and 2013 to the Indian's particular design specifications; You could tell it's a very dated design. Even though this 2nd ship is just a couple years old the original design dates back to the mid 80s.
The Talwars are also very decent frigates and three more are being planned for the Indians. That last Neustrashimyy, the Yaroslav Mudry I discussed earlier, incorportaed quite a few of those same enhancments...though not as stealthy. Nonetheless, it's a decent design and was specifically built for the Baltic Fleet, which is not as high a threat environment for the Russians.
There is no doubt that the Russians new Project 22350 design (which is the Gorshkov Class), is the modern successor to the Krivak III hull form for the Russians. It is newer, a little bigger, more stealthy, and has less draft.Money is probably better spent on the Gorshkov-class frigate.
The Russians have already commissioned two of these vessels I believe, are building two more, and plan at least sixteen of them.
Comparing the new Gorshkov to the last Neustrashimyy:

Very similar specs. The newer vessels, is a little bigger, more stealthy, has a significantly larger gun, and carries similar numbers of other weapons, but the latest ones available, as you would expect.
All good stuff.
