I am impressed by the second of the Russian Neustrashimyy class frigates, the F 727, Yaroslav Mudry, which was commissioned in 2009 or 2010. it is a new build frigate.

Here are some pics:

I have to tell you, the lack of that red deck is weird on a Russian vessel...also the distinctly western style quad canister launchers instead of the normal quad mounts under the bridge on either side also look strange on a Russian vessel.

Specifications:

Displacement: 4,400 tons (full load)
Length: 129m
Beam: 15.6m
Draft: 5.6 m
Propulsion: COGAG, 2 shafts
Speed: 30 knots
Crew: 210
Armament:
- 8 x Kh-35 SSMs
- 1 x 100mm DP Main Gun
- 4 x 8 VLS SA-9-N
- 2 x Kashtan CIWS (20mm gun x 2, AAW x 8 each)
- 1 x 12 RBU 6000 ASW Rocket System
- 6 x 533mm tubes for ASW Missiles and torpedoes
Aircraft:1 med Helo, pad & hanger

As heavily armed as many DDGs.

Well, the 20 SS-N-19, P-700 Shipwreck missiles the Kirov class has are even larger.

On this video at 1:35 you can see one of them launched from the VLS forward on the ship.

Later in that video you can see the other VLS cells forward launching the Grumble air-to-air missiles too from their 6 round revolver VLS cells.

The Kriov and Slava class cruisers often sail together...particularly when escorting the Juznetsov:

Gives you a good idea of the size. The Admrial Ustinov 055, the Slava class cruiser on the right, is a big ship. 12.500 tons full load. She dwarves a typical destroyer like the Tyoe 052C/Ds or the Type 45 Darings.

But the Pyotr Velikiy 099 on the left, the Kirov class nuclear powered cruiser, displaces over twice as much as the Slave cruiser. BIG ship!

I would imagine they also sail in a SAG together on occassion. I will look for some pics of that.

Now that is what I was looking for great picture!

Back in the days I would think that USSR could put together a power surface force with

A Kuznetsov Carrier carrying the fixed wing component
A Kiev Class flat top to screen for submarines using helos
A Kirov Class cruiser and Slava Class cruisers and scores of DDG

Not to mention the huge SSBN and SSN arsenal

Btw I just seen some pics of a new Ivan Gren LST Russian launched few years back they have plains to slowly expand their LST fleet with modern LST

Russia's Rosoboronexport Takes Over Crimean Defense Exports

WARSAW — Russia’s state-owned arms exporter Rosoboronexport has announced it is taking over the export of arms and military equipment made by defense manufacturers based in Ukraine’s Crimea, which is currently under Russian control.

Rosoboronexport is part of the country’s defense giant Rostec. The group will help Crimea-based defense firms complete their arms export contracts, Rostec said in a statement.

“The Federal Service For Military-Technical Cooperation has drafted a presidential decree which establishes the rules of importing and exporting military equipment [made in Crimea],” the statement said. “Under the new rules, Rosoboronexport will serve as an intermediate.”

This means that about 30 companies located in the Crimean peninsula, including shipbuilders, aviation and ammunition plants, will be integrated into Russia’s defense industry.

In March, Russia annexed Ukraine’s breakaway Crimea following a controversial referendum to join Russia that was held in the presence of pro-Russian troops. Ukraine did not recognize the results of the referendum and continues to treat the peninsula as its territory.

Rosoboronexport handles more than 80 percent of Russia’s export of weapons and military equipment.

In 2013, Rostec’s revenues generated by orders placed by the Russian Ministry of Defense increased by 43 percent to 281.1 billion rubles (US $8.1 billion).

Russian military industry is reliant on sub parts and assemblies form the Ukraine part of what is happening is that instead of building new factories to make those in Russia they simply imported them. now with the Annexation and potential Annexations parts of that industry base are coming back under the talons of the double Russian Eagle.
Finland Suspends Inquiry Into Russian Violations of Airspace

HELSINKI — Finland’s National Border Guard confirmed Thursday that it has suspended its investigation into repeated violations on May 20 of Finnish airspace by Russian military aircraft until the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can obtain “formal identification” of the aircraft involved from Russian authorities.

A preliminary inquiry by the National Border Guard (NBG) concluded that two Russian military transport/surveillance aircraft (variants unknown), provisionally identified as an Antonov An-26 and a Tupolev Tu-154, trespassed into Finnish airspace on May 20 while on routes over the Gulf of Finland.

Finnish F-18 Hornets, several of which were already airborne at the time of the intrusions, were sent to intercept the intruders, which were located east of Porvoo on Finland’s south coast.

The Russian aircraft are suspected to belong to Russia’s Baltic Military Maritime Fleet, which has bases in Kaliningrad and in Kronstadt, near St Petersburg.

While government officials and military chiefs are playing down the significance of the airspace intrusion, some leading politicians are suggesting that the violations could be connected to recent pro-NATO cooperation statements by Finland and criticism by the Finnish government of Russia’s involvement in Ukraine.

The airspace intrusions also took place on the same day the Finnish military was conducting large-scale exercises by land, air and naval forces in northern and southern Finland.

“There may be a perfectly innocent explanation for the first airspace violation that took place, but it seems too coincidental that a second happened so soon after. Serial violations by Russian military aircraft have not happened for some time. The second intrusion is particularly serious,” said Timo Soini, chairman of Finland’s Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs

The airspace violations may be linked to regional tensions over Ukraine and the critical position that Finland has adopted regarding Russia’s involvement in the crisis, said Martti Ahtisaari, an ex-president of Finland (1994-2000) and the UN’s former special envoy to Kosovo (2005).

“I hope there will be an apology over this. Incidents such as these require documenting and follow-up investigations. One is left to wonder if events like this happen simply due to navigational errors, or if Russia is somehow testing their capability and the limits of our defenses,” Ahtisaari said.

NBG’s preliminary report suggests that, “navigational errors remain the most probable cause” for the airspace violations. According to the report, the first intrusion by the Antonov An-26 plane was clocked at 17:06. The aircraft remained in Finnish airspace for three minutes.

The second intrusion, by the Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft, was clocked at 17:57, and the plane remained in Finnish airspace 19 miles for six minutes. The NBG report speculates that the aircraft may have strayed into Finnish airspace to “avoid a storm front.”

The finalization of the NBG’s investigation is dependent on Russia’s response to a request filed by Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeking an official explanation on the dual airspace violations.

“We take airspace violations seriously, and we are seeking an explanation from Russia. We hope that the incidents are not related in any way to the situation in Ukraine,” said Defense Minister Carl Haglund.

However, Finnish defense chief Gen. Ari Puheloinen is playing down the significance of the double airspace violations. Describing national concern as “understandable” against the backdrop of the crisis in Ukraine, Puheloinen said it would be unwise to read too much in to the incidents.

“Once we obtain the investigative material we will be able to draw conclusions, find out what air traffic controllers said to the aircraft when they entered our airspace, and what the outcome was. These are the factors that will form the basis for conclusions,” Puheloinen said. ■

Mine too, Mirage.

I have a 1/72 scae model of her too. Can't wait to build he one day.

I have 1/72 scale models of all the following Russian big aircraft:

TU-95MS Bear
TU-22M Backfire
TU-160 Blackjack

The Bear and Blackjack are large aircraft.

I also have the following 1/72 scale large US aircraft to build:

B-52H Stratofortress
XB-70 Vaklkyrie
B-1B Lancer
B-2 Spirit
AC-130H Spectre
Shuttle Discovery
SR-75 Penetrator (with XR-7 Thunderdart)

The B-52, XB-70 and Discovery Shuttle are HUGE. So is the SR-75, which is what many people believe was built in small numbers to replace the SR-71. There is no doubt that there is a top secret, to date unrevealed aircraft, many call it the Aurora Project. Anyhow, based on a lot of leaks and many witnesses of the sonic booms, the contrails, and some pictures, a model of the SR-75 was made some years ago and I have one.

I know what you mean about not having time to build models. My wife purchased a F-18E as a birthday present last year, and I still have not found the time to build it. What is the wing span and length on the Tu-95 model?

So if you had to elect piloting a B-52 or a Tu-95, which would you fly first? When you start the construction of the Tu-95 or the SR-75, please start a thead so we can see them.

Russian Air Force to Get 60 Mi-28UB Helicopters by 2020

vIGQIbm.jpg

ROSTOV-ON-DON, August 10 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Defense Ministry will procure up to 60 Mi-28UB helicopters to improve the training of pilots for Mi-28N gunships, the Air Force commander said.

The Mi-28UB is a combat training variant of the Mi-28N Night Hunter attack helicopter that can be operated both from the pilot's cockpit and the flight instructor's cockpit as it is equipped with a dual hydromechanical flight control system.

“We will purchase four to six [Mi-28UB] helicopters for each unit that has Mi-28N in service,” Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said Friday after attending a Mi-28UB demonstration flight at Rostvertol plant, which manufactures both Mi-28N and Mi-28UB helicopters.

“We are planning to procure up to 60 [Mi-28UB] helicopters until 2020,” Bondarev said, adding that the new version would significantly speed up and improve pilot training.

Mi-28N is the latest modification of the Mi-28 Havoc attack helicopter. It has been designed to conduct hunter-killer missions against main battle tanks, helicopters, ground forces, and fortified defense positions in any weather conditions, day and night.

Russia's Defense Ministry has said it is planning to procure between 45 and 67 Mi-28Ns, and to fully replace the Mi-24 Hind helicopters with Mi-28Ns in the Armed Forces by 2015

.

You could tell it's a very dated design. Even though this 2nd ship is just a couple years old the original design dates back to the mid 80s. It was design back when it when Russia was still USSR. I hope they cancel this class after this one.

Money is probably better spent on the Gorshkov-class frigate.
