IMHO, Russia would gladly pay for 1000 Leopards, just to get hands on some technologies and improve its own tank program. But Germans would not sell, not only because they don't want competition but to retain quality edge over potential opponent.

IMHO The Russians would not nor Could not pay for a 1000 Leo's. a small batch perhaps. as a small a dozen for reverse engineering they would and could gladly.
Particularly of interest to them would likely be the improved armor and aiming systems of later versions.
Fortunately they have yet to find a seller.

Remember although Russia has gotten big in the press they still only have a GDP roughly equivalent to Italy. The critical mission for Russia is to maintain Fuel and Arms industry where Russia is the most active and competitive.

Russia has so many tanks I fear no one has enough RPG they have in storage so many tanks they could use the steel to build a bridge around the world don't ask where I heard that but the point is USSR build tanks for the best part of 40 years and they just keep going so many of them are older models rusting in huge armament factory's of days gone by

GDP is a measure of spending, not producing or earning . In real life, Italy is saddled with debt and could not dream to have anything close to Russian armed forces . On the other hand, Russian military budget is $87 billion, so they could afford to spend $7 billion for 1000 Leo's over few years.

Hmmm no chief.. GDP definitely measures DOMESTIC production. I do however agree that in this case GNP paints a better picture than GDP because unlike the US, Russia or even Italy's GDPs ARE not close to their GNP.

This is the thing with Russia

Always has been a land power historically speaking why? Because they have 1/6 of the worlds land mass so if they are going to war most likely they will do it by land no need to put money into navy

They are coked in the Baltic, the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, the Northern and Pacific routes are not ice free all year round so it further kills the navy

But after WWII they decided on submarine and lots of lots of them the Soviet war machine at one time planned 1,200 submarines never materialised though

But during the Cold War they went after the Navy because they had to face the might of the USN which at one time was sailing 15 carrier strike groups

All what we see today is a left over from that period and even today they stand imposing just shows the hell of a plan the Soviets had for their navy

Btw I would not want to be on the receiving end of one of the those huge missile launches from the Slava Class

No wonder the Russian Bear stands tall and proud today they have power and they know it
