What's the Russian total inventory of Mig-29Ks now?

I know that they are going to use Mig-29Ks on the carrier and replace the SU-33s, and I know the Air Force already has some, but does anyone know the totals yet on hand at this point?

Clearly the Indian production boosted the entire prospects for the aircraft.

indicates that there are approximately 254 in operation (of all types). However there are no numbers on the quantity that are in “reserve” or “storage”. I image that storage in Russian terms is not of the same preservation quality as the American facilities in the desert.

In regards to the MiG-29K. The Russian have 20 on order and an order for 4 MiG-29KUB.

I was speaking to Mig-29Ks specifically, and I think to date, the Russian Navy has only received 4 of them.

I believe to date a total of 48 have been ordered. 24 for the Air Force and 24 for the Navy by the Russians.

The Indians have ordered a total of 45 and I believe to date that they have received 30 of them.

What is nano?

MOSCOW, August 13 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian company is developing nanotechnology that would allow production of light-weight ceramic armor for the military and police as early as by the end of 2015, the Izvestia newspaper said Tuesday.
Ceramic armor plates manufactured with the use of boron carbide powder will be used to make bulletproof vests, armor protection for combat vehicles and even for combat aircraft as they would be four times lighter than the existing armor plates.
“The effectiveness of protection…will be 5-6 times higher than that of existing armor while the price will drop by up to 25 percent compared to existing models,” Izvestia cited officials from the Novosibirsk-based NEVZ-Soyuz company.
According to the company, boron carbide armor plates used in bulletproof vests would ensure effective protection from 7.62-mm rounds while vehicle armor would be able stop 12.7-mm and 14.5-mm rounds.
Company experts point out that the new nano-armor could be used effectively to ensure anti-bullet protection of combat transport helicopters, such as the famed Mi-8 Hip, which does not have reliable armor protection.
The Russian government has allocated 145 million rubles ($4.4 mln) for the development of nano-armor technology.
NEVZ-Soyuz is planning to make the first prototypes by December and test them until November 2014.
The production of ceramic armor plates should start in the fourth quarter of 2015, the company said.
7.62mm Round protection sounds Comparable to the plates worn by the US military.

The Aviationist said:
On Apr. 23, two RAF Typhoons from RAF Leuchars, intercepted and escorted two Tu-95 “Bear-H” aircraft that were approaching the British Isles off Scotland.

In what is the eight such kind of close encounter since the beginning of the year, the 6 Sqn’s QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) shadowed the Russian bombers (that were flying in international airspace) until they handed over the two “zombies” to two Royal Danish Air Force F-16s.

Noteworthy, the two Bears were later intercepted by a pair of Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16s that escorted the Russian planes until they flew off the Dutch airspace, reportedly violated by half a mile.

Anyway, as they headed back home, the two Tu-95s were picked up again by the Typhoons that once again accompanied the Russians on their way towards Norway.

During the time the Typhoons escorted the Bears, the RAF pilots had the opportunity to get some nice shots of the “intruders."

It seems that Russia is busy in the Far East as well.

Japan defence chief puzzled by Russian warplanes

Japan's defence minister said Sunday there have been an "abnormal" number of flights by Russian military aircraft close to Japanese islands in recent days.

The country's air defence force scrambled fighter jets for seven days in a row through Saturday after spotting Russian military planes flying along the Japanese archipelago, according to the defence ministry.

On Friday six Russian TU-95 bombers were seen flying two by two, with one pair moving around the Okinawan islands and then going north along Japan's Pacific coast.

The two other pairs flew over the Sea of Japan (East Sea). None of the flights intruded into Japanese airspace.

"They are continuing flights, which we deem as abnormal and were unseen even in the Cold War era," Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters after attending a ceremony in Okinawa to inaugurate an airborne early warning squadron.

The minister, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK, added that Russia's intentions were unclear and Japanese defence officials based in Russia have been trying to check them.

"We are closely monitoring the situation," Onodera said.

24 mig29k have been ordered in total, for navy exclusively. there'd be little sense in air force ordering any as "K" denotes carrier capable airframe. Russian navy received first 4 out of those 24 in 2013 and will receive further 10 sometime in 2014.

Air force has only legacy soviet airframes and 34 mig28smt/ubt airframes. there has also very recently been announcement of contract for 16 more mig29smt for the air force, with the delivery completed by 2016.

numbers of actual active legacy mig29 airframes are very sketchy. In my opinion, those airframes are being rotated in and out of active service to maintain the current 4 active aviation groups (in process of becoming regiments again) plus some training/testing/demo units. Of course, some of the old airframes might be too corroded to be used again without overhaul, which may not happen if air force has decided they rather want to invest in mig-35 purchases. Recent report of incoming large mig-35 contract might signal that is exactly what will happen.

From Japan to Scotland once again the Russian bear stands proud

When I think of Japan it's a world away from Scotland and to think Russia stretches that far is one hell of a country
