Hi guys,

I've got a question in regarding to the new joint Russian-French ATOM IFV. I finally read some articles about it and it mentions about the 57mm Gun that it incorporates. I kind of understand going with a bigger gun since most IFV have add on armor or existing armor that protects them from 30mm. The question that I have is, why a 57mm gun. Other countries such as South Korea and Sweeden are using a 40mm gun. Is this because of Russia experience with 57mm round (the SPAA that they have) or is it because of the 57mm naval gun experience that other countries have.

I think it has to do with the existence of heavy IFV with better armor. Also, the 30-40mm guns have low HE potential and have already reduced the rounds carried compared to the 20mm, 25mm cannons.

The question is, what do you want the main gun to do which a coax 7.62/7.98 or 12.5 will not do.

Coax for this class of vehicle would likely be the conventional 7.62mm MG Russian being based on the PK 7.62x54mm French being Nato based 7.62x51mm the Unique 7.5x54mm French round looking be be phased out now as AA52 is replaced with FN MAG series.

Mission set is fire support and limited Anti armor

Pogosyan is also understood to have confirmed that the slow pace of the introduction of the T-50 PAK-FA fighter means that the Sukhoi Su-35S 'Flanker-E' will be the backbone of the VVS for the foreseeable future. Pogosyan envisages that as a result, the Su-35S, and later derivatives, will remain in production for at least another decade for the VVS. Of the 48 Su-35S aircraft on order, 12 have been delivered so far, with a further 12 planned in 2014 and 14 in 2015. As a result, several additional Su-35S batches are expected to be procured to replace Su-27 and Su-30 models that are being retired, as PAK-FA aircraft will not be able to replace these older models on a one-for-one basis.

Russia boosts military spending

STOCKHOLM — For the first time in 10 years, Russia last year spent a bigger share of its overall economy on arms investments than the U.S. as it seeks to bolster its military capability, a Swedish arms watchdog said Monday.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said Russia increased its military spending in 2013 by 4.8 percent to $87.8 billion, representing 4.1 percent of its gross domestic product. Meanwhile, global military spending fell by 1.9 percent in 2013 to $1.7 trillion, as many Western countries cut arms investments following the financial crisis.

SIPRI program director Sam Perlo-Freeman told The Associated Press the increase in Russia is in line with the country’s 2011-2020 State Armaments Plan that aims to spend over $700 billion on modernizing Russia’s military equipment, technology and industry.

“The goal of building up military capability has been seen as more urgent since the Georgia war in 2008, which revealed serious shortcomings in Russia’s military technology and readiness,” he said.

However, he said economic constraints may prevent Russia from increasing military spending any faster than was previously planned, despite the ongoing crisis in the Ukraine.

“The economy is a key factor, including especially oil and gas prices, and many observers believe that the State Armaments Plan is based on over-optimistic economic projections, so that this may act as something of a constraint on the rate of increase of military spending,” he said.

The U.S. cut military outlays by 7.8 percent in 2013, but remained the biggest arms investor in the world in real terms by spending $640 billion, or 3.8 percent of GDP. The fall is mainly a result of the end of the war in Iraq, the beginning of the drawdown from Afghanistan and effects of automatic budget cuts, SIPRI said.

China increased military investments by 7.4 percent to $188 billion, and is the second biggest arms spender in the world.

SIPRI said a pattern has been established in recent years whereby military spending is falling in North America, Europe and Oceania while it has increased in other regions.

“In some regions, such as those surrounding China and Russia, there is a danger of military spending growth contributing to a ratcheting up of tensions,” Perlo-Freeman said.

He said the lower military spending in Western Europe likely means a diminution of countries’ abilities to intervene overseas, but said the Ukraine crisis could turn around that trend, especially in countries close to Russia.
given the number of Russian military development programs It's only logical.

I think Russia wants a in land route to Crimea this is why they want Eastern Ukraine

One thing is for sure Russia militray is a very well organised and the planning that went into the operations is very good

Helos opened up the air route and the cargos lifters dropped in the troops plenty of AWACS and fighter cover

It was fast and it was quick and land forces moved in very professionally

Today a Arleigh Burke was buzzed about a dozen times by a Russian Su-24 in the Black Sea I mean that's a hell of a move
