Buzzing warships is dangerous and provocative, especially in this circumstances. If they wanted to make show of force, it would be enough just to fly few circles around US destroyer. They would understand the meaning .

On the other side, I hope somebody made few pics or a video of the incident :p

I think Russia wants a in land route to Crimea this is why they want Eastern Ukraine

The situation in Eastern Ukraine is about the status of Ukraine as a whole, and to which sphere the country will ultimately lean. Crimea is a done deal and will remain Russian regardless. Access was discussed by Medvedev earlier in March with plans to build a connecting bridge to Russia proper.

Russia has signed a contract with the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RAC MiG) for 16 more MiG-29SMT 'Fulcrum' multirole fighter aircraft, RAC MiG announced on 15 April.

Valued at RUB17 billion (USD473 million), including ground support and test equipment, the order will see the RAC MiG deliver the aircraft to the Russian Air Force by 2016.

An order of 16 MiG-29SMT fighters was first suggested by Russian Deputy Defence Minister Yuri Borisov in August 2013 to make up for the lack of an immediate order of RAC MiG's newer MiG-35S 'Fulcrum-F' fighter aircraft. The new MiG-29SMTs will allow the Russian Air Force to maintain its operational inventory of light fighter aircraft, according to a statement from the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), RAC MiG's parent company.

New, to keep the assembly line/production of Mig, actually build 24 Mig-29K/KUB ( 4 delivered ) for Russian Navy, seems all 45 for Indian navy delivered, sure at less 30.

Russia AF use yet 36 Mig-29 SMT/UBT Algeria had refused, use by Rgt based at Kursk.

30 millions $ i think is good, in this country labor laws, regulations ... are very different from us in the West and the manufacturing costs are much cheaper, as in China.

In some deals one Su-30 want 30 also.

Are these newly built or refurbished aircraft? So far, all SMT units were refurbished older versions and price of this deal suggests so (just below $30 million per aircraft).

These are new build. The Peruvians purchased some used MiG-29 (upgraded to SMT and near-zero airframe) a few years back to replace some crash losses. And they paid around $US22M+/-

What's the Russian total inventory of Mig-29Ks now?

I know that they are going to use Mig-29Ks on the carrier and replace the SU-33s, and I know the Air Force already has some, but does anyone know the totals yet on hand at this point?

Clearly the Indian production boosted the entire prospects for the aircraft.

That is very interesting. I've been watching Mig-29 developments for years and it looks like these are first newly built serial land-based Mig-29s since 90's . We had some Mig-29Ks and prototypes of Mig-29M but all SMTs so far have been refurbished.

On MiG official site you could read about "new unified family" of Mig-29K/Mig-29M/Mig-35 , while Mig-29 SMT is marketed as upgrade . "The MiG-29M/M2 fighters belong to the new unified combat aircraft family designed on the basis of MiG-29K/KUB carrier-based fighters." Does this means that these new aircraft for Russian AF will have older fuselage with "spine" and possibly downgraded avionics compared to Mig-29K ?
